so last time i was in this hobby we just pasteurized coir verm poo straw and birthed to shoeboxes. idk if i was really good at the whole pasteurization process. but now there are these new fancy bags and im assuming if spawning to bags you can skip the pasteurization and just PC the substrate bags making sure any and all nastiness is killed off so when spawning with clean spawn its gonna love that bag of clean substrate? or is my assumption wrong? also is a coir verm poo straw still a go to substrate mix or is there something better these days? im working with ape, hillbilly, enigma, and JMF. any updated advice is welcomed. im also working with a flow hood for the first time too so im hoping this will also be better than my pervious SAB set up i had in the past.

Yes you can use bags to sterilize that sub. Most of these guys just use coir. Your mix will perform just as well, if your spawn is clean. Personally if I'm doing tubs, they're usually straw cased with coir, or just coir if I'm being lazy. You can use all sorts of different stuff in bags if you're gonna sterilize.

just read the outdated thread and i guess it seems that doing all that extra stuff really isnt needed anymore just coir in a unmodified tote and forget about it?

I mean yeah that's pretty much what I said. It just depends on your situation really. Some people (me) use more nutritive subs or prefer the price and availability of straw, other people have contam issues frequently and so like coir There's no set rules. Do what works for you in your situation.

Yep, all I use is oats for spawn, then coir for sub, in an unmodded tote with a flipped lid. Couldn't get any easier. Some people dial totes in with holes and polyfill/micropore tape, I don't bother. I remember back when everyone was pasteurizing manure to put to their grain spawn which was usually inoculated with a msss. It's gotten a lot simpler and easier these days.
