When wrapping a lab dish around the perimeter edge with a roll of cut down shrink wrap to the dimensional height of the dish assembly.
What gets the tightest seal, the unspent roll against the edge, or the wrap against the edge and the roll on the outside? Or does it even matter? Second, I'm assuming when done wrapping the perimeter seal, one holds down the end with a finger and just pulls the roll until the shrink wrap breaks? Any shrink rappers of plate edges out there that can go throw down some experience would be great as I shake in fear with the thought of parafilm and SAB work.

I personally love parafilm but it took me a while to figure out techniques to make it work, with cling wrap just use whatever technique that is comfortable for you while also minimising pressure and movement on the plate, maybe practice with an empty or old one, and yes, tearing is fine, grafting tape is awesome also and you donβt have to cut it to size.

I personally prefer parafilm, but I've used plastic wrap. It doesn't really matter which way the roll is faced ime. What matters is your ability to keep tension on the wrap against the plate while you wrap. I usually press my index finger on the plastic wrap against the dish and pull the plate away from the roll, while rotating my wrist and keeping tension on the roll as it is unrolling. Keeping that tension, I reposition the plate to get another rotation with my wrist, until the plate is wrapped tightly, twice. Then I just tear it.

I forgot to mention, be careful how much pressure you put on the plate when you're wrapping it. I've cracked a few hundred petris over the years. Polystyrene is flimsy and brittle.

Oh so very familiar even with limited experience with plates, I have managed to crack at like a ratio of 1:5. Thanks for reminding, I need the combat duty rated plates with all the fumbling I have with them.

Celltreats for disposables. They make polymethylpentene plates if you can afford them. Super sturdy and autoclavable. Nalgene makes the sturdiest ones.

Just got a 5 pack of locally prepared plates, I'll have to be easy on them. I like the suppliers Agar color, it's black. I'll have to look in the 2 you listed for further use. Thank you

Alright! No cracking lids and the glad wrap, oh so much easier. I did it with no problems, pull and stretch, oh yeah! The way I rolled it was with the unspent roll towards the plate fingertip holding down start of wrap so there was a gap between the roll and the rim, I think that way made it easier. I know clear as mud in procedural description, bottom line is it worked.

When I wrap plates with CW I hold the roll on my middle finger, then run the film between my index finger and thumb to allow for easy management of how the film is applied. I get the plate started by slightly stretching the film to make it stay in place, then pull a long section off the roll and then wrap that around the edge, I find this method allows for easier feel for how much is too much pressure to make it snap. Once I have a complete revolution on the plate edge, you can then handle the plate by the edges to avoid cracking it working with it. It also is easier to spin the plates in my hands as I go around as I wrap. Then when the desired amount is wrapped, I pinch with my index and thump and pull it to break it. Hope this helps.

Yes yes it does help. I'm mentally picturing your process by description, and it's almost something out of a material and roller pins mechanism I have seen on machines. Quite interesting method of procedure, thank you. It did snap once, so I just laid down the existing wrap on the edge of the plate and started again but before the snap point, I'm sure it's sealed no problem. Luckily I got a pretty good feel for the snapping point right away, it was very forgiving. Just a finger tap, pull, and twist plate opposite direction while wrap was tight type motor function.

You don't have to pull it so hard that it stretches, just enough so it is tight.
