First Time Shoeboxes - How do they look? * 1
    #28661876 - 02/16/24 09:20 AM (10 months, 25 days ago)

Hi,

I've had some good success with PF TEK and water tub thanks to the great info on here. So, I moved on to agar, grains and my first attempt at shoe boxes. I started 3 6 quart shoe boxes each with a different variety, with oat spawn and and coir, 50/50 ratio. The spawn was created from MS syringes, to agar, then two rounds of transfers. T2 Plates looked clean to my eye, so I went from agar to grains, grew out the jars, then started the shoe boxes on 2/1 with what looked like totally clean grain jars. All of the above was accomplished following bod's various teks, and mushboy's shoebox writeup. I decided to put the shoe boxes in a water tub because it worked well for me with PF TEK, and I am in a dry winter environment with low humidity, central heating, and a tightly sealed home with little fresh air exchange from outdoors during the winter season.

Here are some pics, 15 days after starting the shoe boxes:

Golden Teacher:

PF Classic:

PE:

Overall Watertub Setup:

I keep this setup in a closet with a small radiant oil heater on a temperature controller, and a small humidifier. Temps are typically 72-75 throughout the day cycle, and the little humidifier keeps the closet around 50% humidity most of the time. I keep the closet doors open about 16 hours per day for air. 12/12 light cycle with a couple of 6500K CFLs in chicken coop reflector fixtures. I've been keeping the lid of the water tub propped open a half inch or so on one side. No misting. Generally I see a nice coating of droplets without further tampering on my part.

Some concerns I have:
1) GT has started knotting, but also has some white fluff growing toward the bottom of the pic, overgrowing the knots. It looks like mycelium to me, but it's a little different than the rest of the box. This is towards the end of the tub that receives more fresh air. Also, after the knots formed (perhaps 5 days ago), I haven't seen a lot of progress.
2) PFC didn't grow in as dense as the other two. There are some knots, but again, seems slow to me?
3) PE was the most vigorous, both on agar, on grain, and in the shoebox. But, there's weird blobbing (lower right). Also numerous small tan blobs forming all around the shoebox. Maybe these are just odd mutant pins?

Overall, I feel like once the coir was colonized and some initial knots formed, things slowed down. Maybe this is normal.

Any feedback welcomed and appreciated.

Following… I’m also new at this and at a similar stage, but opted to send some of my first PF cakes to a shoebox w/coir. (I also have agar and grain jars happening in parallel.)

I’m just taking a shot in the dark here, but that GT tub looks like it might have some “overlay” going on, which I understand can be a sign of contamination.

If I were you I’d probably try to segregate these shoeboxes in case any turn south - that way they won’t infect each other.

Curious to hear what the experts say.

I hope we both see some nice fruits soon!

They look dry. Put the lid back on the container they are in and drill holes with micropore tape over them like a monotub

Put the drill down. They look fine minus some bacteria in 1 and 3 and those tubs are about to explode so you're getting fruits in all of them.

I see clear droplets on the surface especially in most recent pic.  Strap in for blast off.

Well, that'd be great if they exploded with pins soon!

I became sort of concerned after 15 days without real pin development. But I guess that time frame is not totally out of line. There are typically water droplets on the walls and the surface of the colonized substrate without my intervention, so I was thinking the moisture was at least adequate (maybe TOO moist?). Somewhat difficult to see in the pics...

Do you think I should separate #1 from the others as suggested? I.e., does the bacteria in #1 present a risk to the other shoe boxes?

Thank you all for the feedback - it's most appreciated.

That’s how I have one of my setups and it works just fine. They look exactly how I would expect them to look, Other than being a tad bit dry. Once you get to the bulk part it is no longer a “sanitized” process. Solid myc on coir is what prevents bad stuff from growing. Once they start to pin you may need to add some FAE but that is something you will need to determine when the time comes; based on how your fruits are reacting.  So in the mean time like ET stated “put the drill down”. Give them a light mist, put the lid back on and don’t touch them.

Bacteria won't jump. I don't think 15 days is unreasonable. They look to be knotting up so that's a good sign.

Can you see droplets on all of the trays? At this point in your grow there should be droplets, lots of them. If you don’t have even droplets across the surface it’s dry.

Edit: yes I’m aware of the slight bacterial issue I’m having in the top pic. The spawn was suspect when I made it but not so bad I needed to toss it

You may be referring to my pic that I added, which isn’t a more recent pic of the OP’s grow (not trying to hijack here - just sharing a pic my shoebox at a similar stage for comparison and general sharing of stoke. 😎)

Thanks everyone. I guess I should have just been more patient. I went back a few hours later, and low and behold there are the first pins in the center tub. I've given it all a light spray and closed it off a little further to get some more droplets on the surface. I'll give an update as it progresses.
