curious about the reason 2nd, 3rd flush mushrooms are bigger than the first flush

I've had enough grow experience now to see very consistently that with a monotub, the first flush produces a lot of smaller/medium sized fruits, and then with each subsequent flush I get fewer fruits but larger.
I just harvested a 4th flush from a monotub of B+ (millet/ CVG) and the fruits were 3 or 4 times bigger than the first flush.
I'm interested in knowing the mechanism behind this. Is it allocation of nutrients...is it genetic mutations?
I'm interested in knowing in order to understand if it is desirable...big fruits are cool looking but not sure if the yield is better. (might get more yield from lots of smaller fruits)
Also, interested in knowing if it makes sense to wait for a later flush to clone a larger fruit thinking it has healthier genetics. (I wonder if this phenomenon also happens from grows started with a clone.)
Thx!

My guess is the dunk before 2nd and 3rd flush that typically isn't done before the first. More water to get absorbed.

The size of the fruits is usually correlated to the amount of available water in the substrate. More water and the fruits can grow bigger. It's possible your substrate is initially under-hydrated, and then you are getting better flushes after rehydrating.

What your experiencing isn't unusual. You usually start seeing less mushrooms but bigger mushrooms from each subsequent flush. It's kind of a last ditch effort from the mushrooms to spread their genetics. There is only so much nutrients in your spawn, adding water just gives it more time, eventually the mycelium is going to run out of energy so it start pushing to make larger fruits in an attempt to make something large enough to throw it's spores out as far as possible and pass it's genetics along.
