 Not fooling' me this year!!
Here's the real thing...

Edit: This was about 10 feet from a flooded Ohio river tributary. My first time ever checking this spot out personally. Before this flood, I was planning to hunt in areas that are actually underwater right now. I found all these within 5 feet of each other, then I found one lonely ovoid a few hundred yards down the way. Lots of sycamore and boxelder maple around. I will be checking back at this place soon. I'm about to plant these stem butts and mycelium covered sticks in different places.

According to INaturalist, ovoids should be up in DC metro area. At this point it may just be the warmer, well irrigated spots, but I’d expect things to be up and running by next weekend with the temps finally getting up there.

Well the eclipse was a total flop in my area. I swear there was a cloud anchored right above us the entire time.

It was awesome in Ohio. Mostly clear skies, I could see stars during the totality.

Hey all, for anybody in the Ohio area I’d love to hunt with yall. I’ve been researching and searching for about 2 y years. Haven’t found any yet but hopefully this season is the one. Also the eclipse was really nice, I got to watch it with the family and neighborhood, it was really surreal especially with the way the lighting changed.

Surprised i even managed to get this with my phone guess the cloud helped, had to reduce my exposure all the way.
on the topic of ovoids, leaf litter might be my new bestie. I just push it around lightly so I dont worry too much about disturbing the mycelium.

Rivers levels are going down. If you look at towns like Gallipolis, OH that got hit, there was some flooding. I found ovoids on Sunday in a flooded area. If I hunt the same area tomorrow, there will be ground that was covered in water two days ago, that's now starting to dry. I'm thinking this would be like hunting after a heavy rain, with the moisture levels. It hasn't rained in a few days, but would I be correct to assume this? Check the spots that were just flooded, now uncovered?

If the flood deposits a bunch of river silt or mud it kinda fucks up the fruiting

I don’t know what the official rules are on this thread, but I am of the opinion that soliciting for hunting meetings should be kept to a minimum for safety reasons. Not to say I think this thread is of high priority to LE, I just think people need to be very careful. I’d also be very careful in giving out specific information on where you live. Not to call you out specifically, Nyx.

The water here got really fucking high, covering the first floor of houses and shit. Seen a couple cars I got washed into the floodplains and boats capsize all over the area. Setback not expecting a phenomenal year in this area

Might not be good for some of the floodplains but the heavy rain will make big mulch piles fruit like crazy … town compost facilities and lumber yards

Looked around my usual early spots and didn’t find anything yet. It’s getting pretty hard to find the first crop of ovoids around here because the celandine is so thick it’s almost impossible to see them until they get big enough to poke through the carpet of vegetation. Once the celandine starts to die off, it gets much easier.
Didn’t find anything in Ohio this weekend except some tubaria in mulch but the rain and clouds did clear out in time for totality

That was a pretty cool totality pic koods!
I went out for a couple hours void hunting again today and got skunked again. I'm confident I'm in the right locations, just feels a bit early in the season since I'm in the northern half of Ohio and it doesn't seem like full spring is in swing just yet... I say that because I'm not finding a lot of mushrooms in general other than Stereum, Fomitopsis, Turkey Tail, and a LOT of Galerina Marginata =/. Seems to be about the only thing I can find growing from my mossy decaying logs.
After going out ovoid hunting for about 10 hours of hunting now I have some follow-up questions I'm hoping you guys won't mind answering, as well as some habitat pics to make sure I'm in the right place(s)! I GREATLY appreciate any responses to these questions/pics.
I'm looking for creeks/rivers with overflow areas and wood/logs that are in these areas. It poured rain for 3 days last week and since then the temps have gone up to steady 50's+ with yesterday and today being 65-70. So I'm going out hunting approx 7 days after the rain (figure this would get them out of the pin stage and help make them easier to find).
1) How close should I stick to the creek/river area? 2) When in these areas should I be focusing more on looking for dead logs or something else/the entire area in general? 3) Does any body of water with an overflow area work? Such as ponds or lakes? 4) I believe I'm in a "Zone 6" type area. I'm not quite familiar with what this means as far as the season but would assume since I'm a bit farther north than others in this thread that my ovoid season would start a bit later than the other warmer weather zones?
Of course when I'm out walking I think of like another 20 great questions but forget them when I get home. I'll start writing them down XD.
PLEASE NOTE: Every single pic here is within 50 feet of some sort of a creek/river/stream.

Romes, from my limited experience, I have found them always within a few hundred yards of a river, but that's probably because those are the only places I've looked. The ones I found appear to be growing from the ground, but they are actually growing from decaying wood beneath the ground. With that being said, I think dead logs are I great indicator that there are plenty of dead trees buried beneath them. As far as lakes and ponds, perhaps. We have a lot of manmade lakes here, which are fed by creeks that seem like they would provide great habitat. I can't remember from the past few years, but I'm sure someone has posted ovoids near a lake. My area was just reclassified as zone 7A, changed form 6B. I found ovoids this past Sunday, and most looked a bit past their prime, so we have had them here for at least a week now.
Your pictures look like good spots in my opinion. You've ID'd a number of other species, so you have a good idea of exactly what you're looking for. Also, rememember, you don't have to hike miles to find these. People find them in their yards, at parks, playgrounds, just about anywhere that conditions are right. Look for boxelder maple trees, or any mulch that's been out since last year. Now is the time!
