Today I found a lot of Psatherella sp. just wanted to do a little info about it since it’s always good to be refreshed and maybe useful for any newbies. In the first two photos the ovoid is on the right and the no-ovoid (relics term I now use) is on the left. In all the photos the no-void is Psatherella. You will notice a faint fibrous margin, translucent and brittle smooth white stem. Also they sometimes will turn black upon touching them but that is not to be mistaken with bruising. Enjoy!
Ovoid on the right, No-void on the left Ovoid on the right, No-void on the left
If you catch it early enough you will see a lot of those fibers. Clear sign it’s not what your looking for
This one realllllly got me.
But the brittle stem is always a quick giveaway. Eventually you will just know that they “look wrong” even if you can’t explain it.

Also, here were my escapades today. I started a bit north of my area and worked my way back how. It’s crazy to me that the PA phenotype is totally dominant just an hour north or me and totally non existent around my town.
So first here are my 1 hour north specimens.

And here are my home town specimens. Very different morphology.

Wubs, I'm about an hour north of you (based on iNat) and I found my first nipple caps of the season. Funny, I've never seen that phenotype before. Had to re-convince myself it was a real ovoid.
Hello everyone - I've been in an out of the Ovoid thread over the past six years or so under many different usernames in OH and NC and most recently central VA.

Hey I saw you post in the salon discord earlier! Glad you’re having such luck. I think the phenotype closer to your neck of the woods looks cooler. Been looking like crazy lately but only finding morels(still pretty cool)

I am heading to Southern Illinois to view the eclipse. Going Hella early in case Camp Site that I want to be at gets crowded. Probably going to spend most of Thursday and all day Friday looking around some flood planes. There are no observations on iNaturalist for the entire state of Illinois. It would be cool to put it on the map over there. They started popping up in St. Louis a few years ago and I have seen some inaturalist observations just over the southern border in Kentucky. I don’t think there’s any reason why they wouldn’t be in Illinois. I’m just probably a few weeks early. Has anyone ever had luck in Illinois?

As I’m driving, I keep refreshing my iNaturalist page and seeing all of the places where I guess possibly general locations that people have logged finding specimens. I am planning to try and look for some public parks near the Ohio river or possibly some tributaries on the Illinois side. Wish me luck. Hoping to find some morels or ramps as a consolation prize.

Have they ever been found in Indiana? I bet if you looked near Cinci you could find them there. Illinois seems like it is pushing it, but your not going to find them if you dont look!
My voids kind of shape shifted. In the wild they have much bigger caps. I transplanted wild material locally to grow them in wood chips within walking distance of me and they look a bit different. I assume it is just micro climate and what kind of wood they are growing on.
I just picked some voids while sleet and snow was coming down. Hopefully the rest of them I left survive the cold snap.
wild finds right beside the ohio river in SE ohio.

transplant grow (last year)

Good luck, hope you are the first to find some there! And right before the eclipse, that would be so awesome. Have fun

To be clear, I would be the first one to post them on iNaturalist. I’m sure if they are there. Somebody’s already found them. As mentioned above, they have been found in Nashville and St. Louis. I will be smacked dab in the middle on the Ohio river. It would be hard to believe that they could be in those two places, but not where I will be. Timing will be everything. Morels are already out and blue are up. That is super early for this area. I’m excited to look. Of course I won’t have anything to do with them because I don’t have access to a dehydrator if I do find them but it would be cool to take photos. I cultivated spot seems to be pretty similar to the ones that I find in the wild. It might also be that my patch was well established from the get-go. A couple spots that I threw some stem butts under a log produced smaller fruits. I assumed it was the colony had not yet organized itself and established the following year it again in that same spot, and they were more of what I would expect in the wild. Anytime they fruit on Woodchips there is a strong chance that they could have short stems and smaller caps as well. Not all the time, but I have noticed that pattern as well. Sorry if any of this doesn’t make sense because I am voice texting.

If ovoids have been found in Missouri near St. Louis, is there an argument against them being deeper into the Midwest? If they’re in Missouri and also the west coast, why wouldn’t they close the distance to some degree? Maybe you could argue they get more extreme temperature swings, but ovoids seem to be pretty resilient,
If you look on Google earth at the features of these Midwest rivers in Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa, you’ll notice that they’re just as Sandy if not more Sandy than at least some of the rivers around here. Besides the heaps of cultivated land there’s still trees populated along most of them.
Just a thought.

Soloist, have temps been staying more mild there, being on the coast? I'm in wv and the temp got very close to freezing here last night. Tons of rain this week. We're on flood watch. This is such a contrast from last season, we were so desperate for rain! If this is the last cold snap for us, then shit is about to jump off down here.

Found a 20m square patch on mulch last night. My first hunt in Virginia. I've been been hunting floodplains with acceptable success for about six years, but this is my first proper mulch patch.

Checked out a spot that I hadn't explored before due to the fact that the creek is not visible on google maps (except during certain times on google earth). Right as i enter the park i stumble on a hefty mulch pile and decide to check it out. I found this myc going absolutely insano mode (some sections fully exposed to air) on the mulch.

I noticed something peculiar about some of the heavily myceliated pieces, something that i have observed before in a semi confirmed location, it looks like the wood itself is staining blue?.. This was seen on multiple pieces and it makes me wonder, have yall ever seen this in your ovoid mulch patches?

I think that wood staining is from a bacteria
Here’s some psilocin stained wood
