Thinkin bout heading north but don’t wanna take the trip if it hasn’t been good for fruiting. Question, what are the usual temps for voids? Do you wait for a warmer day to go out or go a day or two after it has rained? Found my first 3 last year so I’m gonna try to beat my personal best along w finding my own spot
take spore prints that you can grow eventually and/or bury stem butts/fruits that you wouldnt eat in mulch/woodchips ect
you will have ovoids for life if you steward a patch

Wife and I got out for about four hours yesterday. Observed 800-1000 specimens in central VA. Some were a couple weeks old and spent.
Be well, everybody.

Forgot to say, those look healthy
I remember your pics from last year, that patch you got grows some damn fine specimens

Excited to join this thread! I'm in the northern half of the state of Ohio and I just went out today and finally saw mushroom pins and fruiting bodies (not ovoids unfortunately). I have a ton of Rivers and creeks in the area, especially from state parks. I didn't think Ovoids would be out this early (my first real season as a mushroom hunter - despite my hundred hours or so of prep/research/learning). I've got several spots I think would be great for ovoids so I apparently need to get out and start checking them. There's been a LOT of rain recently with warming temps, so conditions are a brewin =D.
At this point I'm getting comfortable identifying mushrooms, but of course would never eat any until I still had it confirmed past me, so it's more about covering ground and getting that extra confirmation... Would love to meet up with someone in northern Ohio for specifically Ovoid hunting (for starters)! Hit me with a PM if you're in the area and interested.
Thanks for this thread and I hope to share pics of some ovoids in the near future =).

Welcome to the party! There is an ovoid thread from each year which you can find by using the forum's search function. These threads are filled with information that is very useful for a new ovoid hunter. I look very closely at pictures people post of habitats where they have found ovoids. There are literally hundreds of pages of discussion about how to find these! Good luck!

Haha just joshin'
Bracing for the cold as well. I'm not super worried though, the model i'm looking at as well as the ten day forecast show a rise in temps around the 10th and some precip that'll potentially moisten most of east coast soon after so I'll make sure to get my hopes up after that happens haha.
The cold has been giving me a chance to hunt habitat before season kicks off though, and my spidey senses are tingling with a few of these. Only time will tell...

Romes I'm also in NE Ohio between Steubenville and Martins Ferry, just moved here last fall in a area not far from the Ohio river with plenty of streams and perfect habitat for Ovoids. I'm a veteran Ovoid hunter but this will be my first year in this region. I'm very interested in finding someone to join me this season and would be glad to pass down the knowledge I've learned seeking these amazing gifts and what they've taught me. If you're interested I'm ready when you are. I say the 10th to the 20th they'll be poppin if there's any in my area. We might find some this week if we're lucky.

Nyx99, that's a great area, near Wheeling. There are a number of posters from Pittsburgh area who usually share their finds. Last year I found some off the Mon river near the wv state line. Wish I could join you guys up there! I'm a little further away now. It's cool to see new Shroomery members looking for ovoids this season, and sharing their experiences! I'm going to be out in the field all day tomorrow. It's been raining.

Going to Youngstown this weekend for the eclipse. Gonna check out habitats. Certainly way too early to find ovoids that far north, if they even go that far north.

Great to see ya back this year relic.
If it's cool, I like to hook back up with you for another foraging adventure, meet your wife & vice versa you meet my husband. I'd love for him to see your area, mainly the size of your trees which fascinated me as you probably remember. LOL I know that spot is a public area but I would NEVER hunt in someone else's spot without them or their permission 1st.
PM me if interested & happy hunting
