The Steel City has already seen 13 days of rain in April and picked up 7.85 inches of rain. That makes this the wettest April in 123 years. April 1901 still holds as Pittsburgh's wettest April on record when 8.11 inches fell.
Yhea.. Its not looking good at this point for the creeks and low lying areas. My 2nd best hunting grounds was fine in May of 2019 with over 5 in. of rain but its under water right now.

Havent found a salamander yet with all the hours ive spent scoping my creeks. They're pretty neat especially the spotted ones that Koods finds, got a nice camera so i wanna snap a pic of one in habitat.
Speaking of Agrocybe, found a torn mycelium laden bag of hardwood mulch in the park so i decided to keep tabs on it for a couple weeks, it went crazy with them when i checked in today, fruiting all throughout the top of the bag.

The only ones I found so far this year in wood chips are getting quite dry I feel from the sun and wind, but it is still early here. The tops are cracking and they don't turn from white to blue as instantly like a minute after tearing one in half and rubbing the halves together.
Still neat to watch one turn from white blue over a couple minutes though.
Edit: There's a bald eagle nest near some ovoids here and you see one of the eagles fly up and down the river by the other spots too fairly often, but I don't think I ever saw more than 2 eagles at a time.

koods that's awesome! They released some near me every 5 miles in the river about 10 yrs back. I remember when my husband & I seen our 1st. We were kayaking & I spotted him, my husband was in disbelief, saying there's no way. Then he turned around & flew right over us, less than 10'. We could here the wind move as he flew & that wing span covered our kayaks beside each other not counting the space between us. Just AWE

Congrats to all who's season has begun.
I went this afternoon in hopes the rain we got Friday & the warmer temps would kick off my season with at least a pin or 2. NOPE< NOTHING It seems too dry & in the lower sections - just some mycelium, no pins.
So here i'll be...

I found two of these salamander in my searches. I find these WAY up in my woods at Michigan cabin. They are just under pcs of wood I resorted to flipping pcs to locate mycelium and found these n put em back after pics. These are fast squiggly guys. They look like a worm and are so small worms are often bigger. I love salamanders it means area is not too polluted usually

Another note.....zooming in on my own pics I saw biggest pins were on my big stick where My hand grabbed it look close two pins one decent lil guy I missed seeing them right away

Hell yeah dude, hope it grows into an ovoid. Gonna check some "natural" type urban spots where I saw some good myc and hopefully I'll see some pins tomorrow. Saw an iNat observation recently which indicates to me they might be in my general area but with the dryness though, I'm not gonna get my hopes up.

Red backed salamanders come in two flavors. One is all black and the other has a red stripe.

2013- found ovoids in Atlanta area. Spread myc chips, stem butts, etc for years….lotsa N Ga finds these days. Have now put WNC on ovoid map with another successful transfer…started this bed last spring w stem butts from GA finds & was happily surprised to see these lil guys yesterday. Woohoo for those aggressive ovoid strains! Also, if anyone has any suggestions for chipmunks or moles or whatever is chewing through the bird mesh stuff, please share. Thanks all, happy hunting!!

I hope to find those someday. I find yellow spot black ones. Blue dot black ones and the tiny redback ones often in upper Michigan, I throw pcs of osb and wood in woods so they have more hiding places. It's fun to look under them like I'm a kid yet lol 😆

Spotted salamanders are mildly toxic. Eating one or two efts could be fatal. Tetrodotoxin is one of the most toxic substances known. Fatal in microgram amounts:
A Fatal Poisoning From the Oregon Rough-Skinned Newt (Taricha granulosa)
Quote:
A 29-year-old man drank approximately 150 mL of whiskey at about 11 AM July 9, 1979. At 6 PM he swallowed a 20-cm newt on a dare. Within ten minutes he complained of tingling of the lips. During the next two hours he began complaining of numbness and weakness and stated that he thought he was going to die. He refused to be transported to a hospital and was left alone for 15 minutes and then experienced cardiopulmonary arrest.

I took some like that from Olentangy area to expand, it was only ropes of tough mycelium in the flood plain. I think yours looks great also Def watch that area in next week's after rains
