Some strange mushrooms lurk in the shadows

Just out of curiosity, have any of you ever seen a mushroom that looks like its dead with a grey stem and a cap that is shaped like an upside down U ... the cap has black jagged growths coming of it all over it... I saw this growing in a group of 3 in some moss in my backyard... looks like it should be called the grim cap.. but anyway... sorry for the lack of a picture... i just thought i'd ask if anyones ever seen something similar to this description
