Shiitake - post first flush
    #2865712 - 07/07/04 06:15 PM (12 years, 4 months ago)

Good culture - strong on agar. Strain grows well on organic wheat grain (fully colonised in 7-14 days - glass quart jars). Grain to fully colonised sawdust block (4lb/1.8kg) in about 10-14 days. Sawdust spawn to fruiting block > fruiting block incubates (20/23C) for approx 8 weeks and primordia occur. Some massive fruitings of up to 600gms per block, average block yield on first flush @300gms.

Harvest mushrooms. remove blocks from grow room and allow to dry for 3 weeks. Weight of block coming out of grow room is around 1.8kg. Weight after 3 weeks drying around 700gms.

Blocks are then soaked in cold water to induce second flush. Authors suggest up to 36 hours: after 5 minutes our blocks are saturated and back up to 1.8 kilos in weight. Soaked for longer than this and they would fall apart! Blocks soaked for between 5-15 minutes then placed back into grow room at around 18/20C at 75-85%RH fluctuating.

Mushrooms don't seem to want to grow! Best results are about 500gms from 31 fruiting blocks?? Is it something glaringly obvious to others, because we cannot see it!

Look forward to some lively responses!

Are they supposed to dry out so much? Aren't they only supposed to "rest"? I think you dried the mycelium dead.

I think the soaking was too short. I dunk my Shiitakeblocks for 24 hours and it works well to initiate a new flush.

wish i could help more but until i get my ass in gear for winter production i'm in the dark on the subject. I can say that the procedures outlined in GGMM not only state but also picture blocks being soaked for 24 hours. I don't have the book handy here at work but, IINM, soaking was performed for the 1st flush. I could be dead wrong on that tho.

If the blocks are going to fall apart after only 5 minutes of soaking then it is obvious that the mycelial integrity has been compromised. This is where I would tentatively go along with Anno's prognosis.

 not exactly sure why i felt so compelled to reiterate the above posts

i think GGMM says rest for 7-10 days, then soak for 1-3 days. ice recommended to give a cold shock at the same time.

for pinning again, you might want to consider upping the humidity to near 100% again. the fluctuations from 75-95% are supposed to keep green away and let the fruits harden for a longer shelflife i think.

what was the difference between the sawdust spawn and the fruiting block? bran/gypsum?

you are spot on concerning fluctuations. an additional advantage is the signature crackling on the cap that, depending on where in the world you are, makes the mushroom more valuable and supposedly increases the immunopotentiator content. it has been my experience with outdoor cultivation that the fluctuations are conducive to larger, meatier fruits but it really is impossible for me to determine that as a fact.

Thanks for the comments: In response to:-

Anno: we crack the blocks open (in half)after 3 weeks to check for continued mycelial growth, we are always pleased to see this happening.

Shiitakelover: if we soak them any longer then they are completely saturated, to the point where they could fall apart if placed on racks!

Shirley: will try 10 days - maybe that blocks do dry out beyond trigger point or Stamets' window of opportunity?

I don't know how your blocks look like but I had never problems with fall apart. They are very robust...
