Extremely Cheap Flow Hood Fan
    #28656824 - 02/12/24 01:18 PM (10 months, 29 days ago)

Hey guys,

Making this post to help out anyone who is trying to build a LFH on a budget. So as you probably already know, second to the HEPA filter the most cost prohibitive component is the blower fan.

I am sure you have already looked at very expensive fans that may barely be enough to achieve sufficient flow. I was able to get a 2000 CFM squirrel cage blower for $15. All you need to do is find a junk furnace from a residential application. They all have large squirrel cage blowers that circulate air through an entire household, they can almost universally be regulated with a fan speed controller.

To source one I would call local HVAC companies, particularly small business types as they probably have a stock pile of junk units with bad heat exchangers they would love to have hauled away. You can test the fan with 120v ac power cord and some wire nuts. You can also call local scrap yards to see if they have any junked furnaces.

I disassembled the one I pulled and power washed it, spray painted the wheel and housing. I then bought a speed controller from harbor freight(a speed controller is necessary when using an hvac blower because it outputs way more than you need even on the low speed). This thing is mint, used for 2+ hour cycle time and it doesn't even get warm to the touch.

If you have any questions on how to do this, feel free to ask, I am very happy to help.
