Shaw said: I read years ago, (maybe TMC) that you didn't want to even use agar plates that were fully colonized. Just a colonized piece of it. The reasoning here is that if a plate got contaminated it would be less noticeable without uncolonized agar for it to show up on.
That makes sense. I have more plates coming along right now. I’ll store em In the fridge after they reach half way and try that next.
Been hitting a contam wall as of lately. Spawn bags stall out, smell musty and bacterial. I’m doing all my work in front of a flood hood but I’m sure I’m missing something. May start from scratch at some point. Been working with 1.5 year old genetics

Are you saying its been mycelium for 1.5yrs? I never tried going to agar plates because of contamination fears. In my mind its impressive that you've kept sterile samples that long. It was always a purchased syringe into jars. I see bag teks have taken over, and I'm not sure the reason for that, but there must be something since it seems to be so common now.

I had old LC that performed extremely well from Jan of 2023, so not quite 1.5 years lol.
But I had it non active for about 9 months, before I finally got back in the hobby. I had tested the LC on grain, put some to agar. And put the jars in the fridge. - the bags all fruited well after spawning to bulk.
It was odd though in regards to the plates I made off the old LC. the more transfers I took, the more fucked they got. Wispy and weak looking.
I ended up just cloning some of the fruit that looked the best and have been just running with that.
Bag tek for me is just convenience, no need to make liners and cleaning tubs, and for me, takes up less space. I was actually big on AIO bags as it was just so damn convenient. I had a couple of great runs, and then it went to shit, so after that 9 month break, I went back to humble beginnings of making my own spawn and bulk.
