How do I keep contamination to a minimum when transferring colonised grain from my mason jars to the tub? How do you guys do it? I will be using coco coir with my grain jars.

Sterility is gone when we spawn to tubs, we spawn open air, so just shake your jars, dump in tub, mix up with coir, compress and level out and done.
That´s why it´s very important to have your jars fully colonized. Your mycelium fights its own battle now, and doesn´t allow competitors to conquer their territory (for now )

Also, post photos of your spawn before you send it to bulk sub.

It’s all open air. I wear gloves but probably not necessary. Just wash your hands really good. I do it right in my kitchen. I take a 600 gram brick of coco coir, put it in a bucket, and pour in 2760ml of boiling water. Put the lid on the bucket immediately and leave it a little loose on one side so it can vent. Throw a towel over it and let it sit overnight. At least 12 hours so that it’s room temperature. This is pasteurizing. It kills most of the bad stuff. Not all, but it get most of it so that the mycelium can simply overwhelm whatever is left in there.
Then, I open the bucket (open air again) and mix up the coco coir really well. If there’s any fry chunks left, they’re usually small so I just crush them with my fingers and mix mix mix until it’s all even. I grab a handful and squeeze. If I can manage to squeeze a few drops out, I know it’s good. If not, I add maybe 1/4 cup of water and mix it all up again. Give it the squeeze test. I usually end up adding about 1/4 cup of water. If you squeeze and water is just running out, it’s too wet and you’ll need to add vermiculite. I bought a bag of vermiculite for this purpose and have never needed it.
For your water to coir ratio, weigh your coir. My bricks of Coco Bliss are 600 grams. Whatever weight you get, multiply by 4.6. The number you get is the amount of water in milliliters that you need to boil to add to the bucket. In my case, 600 gram block of coir times 4.6 = 2760 ml of water. I have a 100% success rate with this method.
When I am ready to spawn, I pour about 90% of it into the tub. I then take my spawn jars or spawn bag or whatever I have, break it up, pour it all in the tub with the coco coir and mix mix mix. A plastic spatula or scraper for doing drywall repairs helps smooth it out. Pack it down snug. Don’t smash it. Just pack it down. You can use your hand but I like to use a concrete smoothing tool to snug it down. Get it nice and even and smooth. The smoother the better. You’ll feel it when it’s snugged town.
Finally, take the remaining coir in your bucket and pour it in. Smooth and pack it too. Nice casing layer. Nice and smooth. The casing layer should be 1/4” to maybe 3/4” thick. You shouldn’t be able to see any grains through it. Not too big of a deal if you can. But I’m anal like that. Smooth is good and helps with even pinning.
Remember, spawning conditions are the same as fruiting conditions. I use Pastywhyte’s EZ dial monotubs. You can search for it on here. No tape or anything. Stupid easy. Just 16 strategically placed 1/4” holes. Open to the anir without filter tape. I’ve never once had a contamination issue. After I spawn my tubs, the moisture is perfect and I generally don’t have to touch the tub again until it’s time to harvest my shrooms. I have a 100% success rate using these methods.

Thanks for this! I initially did make two 1 litre jars but one got contaminated with mould sadly. Will one be enough?

That all depends on how much spawn you have. You will need to choose a tub that is proper in size for it to work and don’t use too much substrate.

I have a 54 litre tub with a base measuring 12 inches by 21 inches. I am guessing the coco coir needs to be a few inches deep too? Its my first go. One 1 litre jar wont be enough will it? Thing is if I start another jar it will take too long.

Thanks for posting this! Very helpful indeed. I have made my tub like yours.

Ya a 1 liter jar is just barely bigger then a quart jar so what you have with one jar is enough for a shoebox or slightly bigger box. Around a 5 to 10 liter tub. One jar of grains and then 2 or 3 liters of coir should leave you with a bit of head room. For the record a big tub like the 54 liter tub you have would good for 4 to 6 liters of grains. Some people do more as well.

Have a look here. Maybe you have a similar little box, it doesn´t need to be a specific brand. For your 54qt tub you´d need to stretch your spawn massively to bring it to an adequate substrate depth. 1qt of spawn would just be a shoebox or even top fruiting.
Alright WyoMX beat me
