I'm increasingly thinking that vacuum sealing isn't really that important. It's not the vacuum we need... Jars seem to work great. It's the moisture and oxygen barrier that matters. The next thing I try will be using my 5 mil mylar bags with my impulse sealer.

That's exactly right. Cubes just need to be stored away from oxygen and moisture to remain stable. An oxygen absorber and some desiccant in a mylar bag takes care of that. I just like to vacuum seal on top of that because it saves space and probably gives the oxygen absorber and desiccant an easier time as there is less volume.

A note about oxygen vs air that people don't often think about. The air is about 80% nitrogen and 20% oxygen. The 20% oxygen will get absorbed but the 80% nitrogen will remain. This is absolutely not an issue as nitrogen does not affect stability. So air != oxygen.

Make absolutely sure you are storing your oxygen absorbers right with an indicator so you know if they have gone bunk. I also like the desiccant packages that have beads that change colour after they have absorbed moisture. I follow this chart for a recommended amount of oxygen absorber to use: https://www.usaemergencysupply.com/information-center/packing-your-own-food-storage/oxygen-absorbers-recommended-amounts

Mushrooms I have from my 2017 grow are still good stored in this way.

I've found it nearly impossible to use food saver bags without creating pinholes. Even when I allow for some air to buffer, a stem or two always pokes through, sooner or later.

Large, rigid, plastic or glass, airtight food storage containers are my favorite for personal stash.

We are talking about Mylar bags here, which are not intended to be used with Foodsaver type vacuum sealers and can only be used with a hack I posted earlier.

I would not recommend plastic Foodsaver type vacuum bags for long term storage. And not only for this reason.

I do not find your comment very constructive for this discussion. It appears you ha e not read the thread well.

I'll do you one better: I have not read even a single word of this thread, I came busting in through the sidewall, kool-aid guy style with my unhelpful comment.

You're welcome.

Edit:

Bruh, I just read the OP, it seems like there's lot's of people talking about food saver vacuum sealers and their respective bags. Tisk, Tisk, now who hasn't read well?

Sure there were. In the context that they don't work well. We already established that fact. Then we switched to discussion about mylar.

Oh yeaaaaaah! LOL. Bust in any time.

So I tried my impulse sealer with my 5 mil mylar bags and I think that I have bad news and good news.

The good news is that this sealer does seem to seal these bags effectively. I had to turn it all the way up, which does a seal cycle of about 4 seconds. I held the bar down for another 5 seconds at least to let it cool without being disturbed.

To test the seal, I blew up a small bag like a balloon, sealed it, and then held it underwater while I squeezed the hell out of it. The seal held up and I did not see any bubbles.

The bad news is that I also discovered a possible factory defect in these bags, and it may apply to other zip-top vacuum bags too. In my first test, I sealed at the top of the bag, above the tear notches. This way, you can tear the bag open and reseal it with the zipper, right? Zip seal isn't great for long term storage, but it's always nice to have options.

Well, when I did the underwater squeeze test, air bubbles came out the sides of the bag where the zipper is sealed into the edge. Yikes.

Maybe the squeeze test isn't fair. Maybe it's too tough. Maybe just my test bag was bad. Or maybe all of these Amazon bags I have are just crummy. Can't say.

I can tell you I have a number of these bags now that are sealed above the zipper, and they are holding seal as far as I can tell. But now I kind of think I should repack, just to be sure.

With this finding, here is how I am thinking about doing things...

1. Pack bag with dried fruit, desiccant, and oxygen absorber
2. By hand, expel as much air as possible without crushing the fruit
3. Impulse seal two times below the zipper, if you don't trust your zipper. (Lots of commercial sealers have more than one strip for redundancy, may as well, right?)
4. Cut your own tear notch if needed
5. Note total bag weight so you can check for weight gain down the road
6. After opening, repack in glass.

Next time, I'll get mylar bags without the zipper seal... They'll be cheaper anyway.

Thanks man, good shit. Wanting to see any further results you make in this. I personally avoid the zipped bags too, no particular reason but when I open a bag I will store the contents in a jar.

I started a test when I first saw this thread.  I sealed 13g of PE into a 4 mil bag on 10/4/2023. I use a chamber vac sealer.  The combined packaged weight was 22.1 g total.  It's been stored on a shelf, the house is running about 40% humidity inside.  Today, two months later, the combined package weighs 22.4 g on the same scale.  That looks about a 2 percent increase due to moisture passing through the bag, in two months.  YMMV

I did try storage in mylar bags and here is an update.

https://shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/28656245

tl;dr After a few months the results are inconclusive; any weight gain is pretty much within the accuracy limits of my scale. I see that as good news so far.

Hello,
New to the site and just started my first grow.
For weed and dry goods I use mason jars and vacuum sealer for mason jars.
The vacuum sealers are only about $30 or less.
I have this one;

That is probably a good method, thanks for the link.

I'm specifically interested in making the best of bags because of the space savings, but glass is great if you have the room.
