Do liners actually prevent side pins?

I’m curious to know if liners actually prevent side pins or do they just hide the side pins so you can’t see them? What’s everyone’s take on this?
I personally have never used one but I’m leaning towards giving it a try because no mater how I prepare my coir, compress my tubs, UN modified vs modified I always end up with side pins.
There is a noticible difference between compressed and fluffy but I still get shrinkage and side pins, even on compressed stuff.
I’d appreciate hearing from everyone that has hands on experience with this.

They do help prevent side pins.
Side pins pop up when your substrate starts to shrink from losing moisture, and the substrate pulls away from the side of the tub. Once you've got that gap between the substrate and the tub, you've got pretty decent conditions for pinning.
If your liner is working properly, it sticks to your substrate as it shrinks, so you never get that gap that leads to pinning. Additionally, if you're using a black liner, it'll block out any light that might also cause pinning.

I understand why and how it works. I’m more curious if is actually works, or if you just don’t see the side pins because they are behind the plastic.

Yes, they work. When you are done with the tub, you can peel the liner away from the substrate and take a look. Occasionally you get one or two pins under the liner, but WAY fewer pins than without a liner. I feel like I remember seeing a comparison thread that someone did, but I can't find it now.
People wouldn't waste their time and money on liners if they didn't work. That said, clearly there are many growers that cultivate without liners. They just learn to live with side pins.

Yes. The liner shrinks with the substrate preventing the gap that creates the micro climate.
