i have noticed alot of people from sc finding mushrooms around the area. i live in the upstate of sc. i am new to mushroom hunting so i really dont know what to look for. i have viewed alot of pics before i looked myself. i found several today near my house. our house was built where a cow pasture once was. there is a small stream next to our house and a wooded area with dead leaves, branches, tree limbs, stumps, patches of moss, and etc. this is where i located these mushrooms. i have pics. some look similar to what everyone calls cubes. one mushroom i picked was purple around the edges, white on top, very bell shaped cap. as soon as i picked it the stem turned very purple. i need to figure out how to get my pics downloaded on this site. all my pics are lager than 200k. can someone tell me how to do this so i can get these mushrooms looked at? thanks!

Welcome if the pics are too large, resize or compress them. get a spore print and post a description to help people give an educated guess on what it is. DH

goto www.photobucket.com
Register for a name (it's free) Upload the pictures to that website then post the "url" under the picture you uploaded in your message post. hope it helps=} But white top cap, purple edges doesn't describe a cube very well, although It's possible, look more for the purple veil (Ring around stem, under the cap) and more distinct things, pictures are very helpful, so are where you found the mushroom, dead bark, cow shit, etc. not general location, specific. also please read the Forum rules, about ID Tips. so we can help you help yourself... there is an outline to go by of what to post..
hope i've been helpful -RX

The first one suggests Pluteus. We need a spore print to make a good guess.
The second one resembles an Agrocybe. Again, get a spore print.
The last ones are Amanitas. We really need to see the base of the stem from the side for identifying those. The only photo (shrooms_011) that shows a stem base is one where the mushroom was broken off.
An important general thing to look at is whether the gills are attached to the stem. The easiest way to see is to cut a specimen in half vertically. Also, note that free gills also means that the stem is relatively thick and fleshy and detaches easily from the cap.
Happy mushrooming!

thanks for the reply. i guess i found some pretty cool mushrooms, but none that were active. i will see if i can do a spore print. i have never done one before, but theres a first for everything. is it possible to find psilocybe in dead leaves, moss, and such or must they grow on dung in the south? like i said earlier, the land i stay on used to be a pasture and the ground is real lumpy where crap use to be years ago. is it possible to find active mushrooms here or must i look for dung first. thanks for your help and understanding that i am new to the hobby.

Not all active mushrooms grow in dung, many of them actually do not. Where there is dung many of times there are not actives, and much of the time the exact opposite, to make a spore print take a piece of computer paper, detach the stem from the cap, lay the cap down gills down on the paper, cover with a bowl, cup, something that will cover it totally, and wait an hour or so.
Hope i helped, welcome to the boards =]
