Compressed sub vs not so compressed
    #28649912 - 02/07/24 06:09 AM (11 months, 3 days ago)

This is an example of why it’s important to compress and make your tubs properly.

. This was done hastily how I used to do it years ago. Loose sub on top, not compressed enough and I’ve got side pins galore. It’s a pain keeping the surface moisture proper and Harvesting is a messy process.

. This was compressed properly and pins are all where I want them to be.

I noticed you’re not using a liner.  I was considering not using one on my next tub.  Do you think they help reduce side pinning?  Or is compression alone a good enough method to reduce side pinning?

I’ve personally have never used a liner. I typically use shoeboxes which a liner is probably a huge pain in the butt. However in any situation I think the compression is key. The side pin tub is a 7qt. The compressed tub is a 66 qt.  I will follow up in a week or so and let you know how it worked out. Beefys tub tek is what I did on the big one and he doesn’t use liners

I don’t compress and use a liner.

No liner, always compress.  I never have side pins.

I'm running two tubs of PE right now and ran a side by side experiment. Both 'base' layers were compressed and leveled but on one I compressed and leveled the top layer and the other I left 'fluffy'. Both tubs got a liner along with every other tub I ever make. My biggest curiosity with this 'experiment' was whether or not the fluffy top layer would produce blobs or fruits.

I'll post my results once I get pins and when it's time to harvest. I'm hoping they both perform equally well

I've seen and heard it both ways from TCs and highly talented cultivators. One smashes his subs with phenomenal results and the other insists on leaving it light and fluffy with equally amazing results. Neither of them use liners nor do they struggle with side-pins.

(compressed top layer)

(fluffy top layer)

Spawned on 1/26. No pins on either of them yet and I'm not having any issues maintaining surface conditions on either at the moment, although some of the uncolonized coir on top of the fluffy tub dries out but the mycelium retains moisture beads.

I notice how the compressed tub has colinized the substrate more evenly and full throughout the center. . :awesomenod:

I did these last Sunday. One tray without a top layer and one tray with. This was purely accidental with a slice of lazy on the side. I ran out of hydrated coir and just didn’t have the time or want to make more so I’m doing an experiment.  Both trays were compressed in a 15qt tub. Roughly 2:1 sub spawn in each with the exception of the 1” top layer on tub 2. I will continue update through harvest.

This tray has no top layer.  One thing that jumps out at me is how this tray allows the water to puddle on top and it seems like I’m going to end up with some matting.

1” top layer. I’m noticing better formation towards the edges of the container. I suspect  this is because I compressed a bit more on the edges. I have the same thing going on in a few more so it’s definitely not just a one off and growing that way.

Update photo: This is the 66qt compressed tub from last week. Two weeks in.
