This might be an absolutely stupid question. Is it possible to grow (gourmet) truffles indoors without growing an actual tree?

No chance. Truffles are actually underground fruiting bodies (unlike sclerotia which are just hardened vegetative mycelium aggregates), and as with almost all mycorrhizal species, fruiting bodies only form if symbiosis is present (many years after inoculation). Growing vegetative mycelium on agar or other media is possible though.

Could you explain this in terms that a moron can understand?

You can clone and grow mycelium of various species of truffles on agar or other nutritious formulas, just like you would with any other species. Vegetative mycelium simply stands for mycelium that doesn't form fruiting bodies, as opposed to reproductive mycelium.
You can't grow fruiting bodies this way, but you can use the cultures you cloned to inoculate young trees, seedlings, etc. Same can be said for most other ectomycorrhizal species such as Amanita muscaria, chanterelles, Lactarius, Porcini, etc. Personally I've never done it so I can't tell you specifically how easy it is to clone a truffle on agar, but it can absolutely be done.
Here's a recent post about culturing Oregon black truffle mycelium on agar.
Hope that clears it up

Okay so another ~8 days later. I twisted off the lid and was greeted by this. The entire house smells of a rainy autumn forest and it looks really clean. The two indents are from the filter and injection ports.
What would be best?
Do I fuck with the top at all? Do I try and clear out the fruity growths? Or just put it into a watertub or like cover it with a ziploc and keep it moist?
Please advise! First time getting this far with Lion's Mane

That is how they usually look when I take the lid off the mudas. I just put them in a water tub from here. AKA did a beautiful grow with just a misted plastic grocery bag loosely over it in his garage. They do want a lot of air but not to get dry. So that is the balancing act.

How's outgrows cultures?
I'm wanting to experiment with King Tuber and Calocybe Indica over the summer, and not sure where to find good cultures of them.

built myself a double burner for 2 presto pcs. we got a glass stove top when we moved and they cant support the weight of 1, let alone 2, prestos. found a free oven online, stripped it and repurposed the burners.

I may have a little bias but I like it!! Let me know when you are ready to make adapter (seprate box) to make it full PID control. Press a button and walk away. It is nice to not have to baby sit your PC. I have mine set up to sound an alarm to let me know my agar is ready to pour when I do agar.

Can I get any feedback one might have on the following:
difference in yield supplementing with additional spawn in a "lipa tex" style grow vs. supplementing with soybean hull or wheat bran and sterilizing the sub.
Is the cost of the additional grain vs the cost of the supplement + sterilization the only factors to consider, or is there a noticeable difference in yield using another supplement?
thanks in advance guys

Okay so I've simply put a water-sprayed ziploc over it with a couple holes. Seems like it's doing it's thing but it's started growing against the ziploc. Do I move it to a water tub setup? I know our dear Melgo has an amazing grow going with a water tub

I’ll be running some side by sides on my next grow to try and see the differences in production between substrates.
Was initially just focused on seeing the differences in substrates supplemented with other available pellets such as alfalfa and bluegrass rather than soy hull pellets, but after seeing many people opting for just spawning grain to pasteurized wood pellets I figured I might as well run that in the side by side also.
Right now I’m thinking I’ll run 4 bags of Lions mane and 4 bags of king blue oyster. The first bag being 2 pounds of HWP spawned with a full mycoquart of grain. The second a pound of HWP a pound of SHP spawned with 1/3 mycoquart of grain. And the last 2 bags ran the same way but with alfalfa pellets and bluegrass pellets in place of the SHP.
I’ll post on my original thread with updates as they come Replacing Soy Hulls in Masters Mix

Anyone have any experience with different colored lions mane cultures? I wasn’t able to save the last genetics from the LC I got because it was heavily bacterial and the agar was a lost cause but I did get some bags to fruit and they were nice and bright white.
I didn’t clone any of those fruits because I had a new culture on the way from a different supplier so I wasn’t too worried about continuing that line. The new culture is nice and clean but the fruits are significantly different and almost a beige color and I’m really not digging the eye appeal.
I’m thinking about ordering another syringe of that first culture and starting over from there but maybe it’s not worth it. They’re both being ran in the exact same conditions. Here’s some pics for a reference.

Oh shit those are pink? I’m red green color blind haha. Interesting maybe I’ll drop it down a bit and see how they respond. Got em in there with king blue oysters tho
