ID Request- California
    #28648299 - 02/06/24 12:03 AM (3 months, 9 days ago)

The first cluster is growing under a tree in the SF Bay Area. Suburban neighborhood on wood chips.

I could not see any gills or a stipe on the first cluster under the tree. Had to keep walking so was only able to snap a quick photo.

My guess is maybe a gymn of some sort? There was another cluster of similarly colored fruits in the same wood chips.
It's hard for me to tell if they are the same species though.

As always, the help is much appreciated!

I’m guessing it’s two different species.

First ones could be Gymns, but would need to see the underside and stipe.

Second ones I’m pretty sure are not Gymns. Can’t tell you what they are though.

I realise I haven’t been much help… lol

Oh wow, I’ve never seen Gymns with such smooth caps like that.

It looks like they are exposed and waterlogged so some might have washed off in heavy rain

Yeah, We have been getting substantial rains lately and the wavy ones are slightly more exposed.

Thanks for the ID help!

Most of our west coast USA Gymnopilus have smooth caps - it is also possible to see quite a bit of variation in cap texture in the same species, verified by DNA barcoding.
