Good list, lots of "classics"
Samurai Champloo for many reasons, not least Nujabes doing his thing.

Spy x Family Review This is irrelevant, slice of life anime. There is also a surprising amount of violence that can happen.
Having a healthy happy family. While also being a spy. While your wife is secretly an assassin. While you’re adopted daughter is secretly able to read your thoughts. Makes for funny & feel good entertainment. Three people that have had nothing to trust in their entire lives. Getting to experience love for the first time. It’s deeply touching. It reminds you of what you are thankful for. It’s also really funny. Good humor and physical comedy do make appearances. They got some pretty silly characters. But it has’nt annoyed me. The core of the show is the question. What makes a happy family? It’s love. It doesn’t matter what you do or who you were. It’s about what you bring home.

Pervy/nonsensical This takes you across the universe. It brings these incredibly powerful space pirates into a Japanese bathhouse. This poor guy Tenchi. Is trying to learn to be a priest from his grandfather. A master swordsman. Suddenly a princess shows up with her little sister. Then tells him he’s of royal blood and he’s already engaged to her.
He is not pleased with that at all. Then a pirate shows up and tells him he should run away with her into space.
He doesn’t want that either. Then cops show up. One is incredibly competent and the other is a total ditz.
Somehow he just feeds them and they never leave. Luckily they turned out to be cool. Eventually a scientist shows up who is responsible for making bioorganic space weaponry. She just sets up in a secret room somewhere.
In a very real sense this show defined what a Haram anime is. It’s hilarious. It’s nonsensical. And it is a bit pervy. This regular dude. Is just harried by these women with literal magic powers and incredible technology. He even tells them. That he isn’t interested. But that makes him seem more interesting to all of them somehow. It actually turns out that he does have special powers because of his lineage. He ends up using these to combat actual forces of evil, spirits & aliens.
All of this is done through a hilarious series of silly events. This uses actual principles of Taoism, Japanese folklore and mythology mixed together. This is all done through an ancient Japanese space fairing race.
Which is unique and very interesting. Honestly, it’s a fabulous show. I would recommend it to anyone. But there are many iterations of it. I like the original best. Characters five out of five Style five out of five Story six out of five. Because this managed to be a really good story. Especially considering it’s a harem anime.

Really pretty intro music.
This is a really sharp animation style. Very eye-catching. It deals with the eerie beauty of being lost in an alien wilderness.
As gorgeous as your surroundings may be. It still wants to kill you. While humans fight for survival on an alien world. You encounter fantastic Flora & Fana like you’ve never see. This makes you thankful for what you have. It insights wonderful concepts and ideas. Creative creature and plant designs. There’s a sense of wonder. As you never really know what’s around the next corner.

A triumph of animation and style.
This is a provocative spy thriller, Set in the far off future. We get to watch Eon carry out a series of missions. The stories can be hard to follow. But they are incredibly powerful. They deal with contentious subject matter. Like fascism, war, and scientific endeavors without any checks and balances. The pursuit of happiness and freedom at any cost. She is a beautiful disaster. As provocative as she is dangerous.
The nemesis between her and freedom. Is Trevor Goodchild, the leader of a fascist state. He’s hilarious as well as incredibly captivating. But deeply frustrating. He has no trust left in humanity. Thus he feels the need to control humanity and prevent it from destroying itself. At least that’s what he thinks he’s doing. Part of you just wants them to hook up. Part of you just wants them to kill each other.
Under different circumstances. They would’ve been lovers. But she wants absolute freedom. He wants to maintain the status quo. With incredibly interesting plots and fantastic technologies that I honestly hope we don’t obtain anytime soon. It’s a titillating feast both visually and creatively.
“ I thought you had an operation here. I thought you were getting some work done. Where is the smoke filled room? Where are the sleazy characters? Where are the window dressers?”

Jujutsu Kaisen, Code Geass, Ranking of Kings, Hell's Paradise, To Your Eternity, Erased, Odd Taxi and Gurren Lagann are all pretty good.

Odd Taxi was excellent. Feel like a lot of people haven't heard of that one.

I've really been enjoying Helck, the Faraway Paladin and Shangri-La Frontier lately.
The Faraway Paladin is especially fun. It's like D&D anime, there aren't nearly enough of those IMO.
Though it is basically a Gacha Life looking anime, I enjoyed: I Shall Survive Using Potions.
Ever seen Le Chevalier D'Eon? French Zombie conspiracy anime. Good stuff.

Two animes you all need to watch made by the same dude.
Ill post pictures and stuff tomorrow but the first one is.
Akagi.
Akagi is fucking awesome. Its about the world of high stakes Yakuza Mahjongg and this dude who is just a complete demon and destroys everyone at Mahjong. The only thing that sucks about this anime is the ending because they didnt finish it correctly. You have one of the biggest lead ups of all time but then it just ends. Like its worse than how the sopranos ended.
Kaiji.
The other one is called Kaiji. This is also about the world of high stakes Yakuza Gambling but this one follow the life of a loser degenerate neet gambler who always gets in over his head and keeps getting in worse and worse shit.
This anime is a ride. They both are but they are worth a watch and you probably havnt ever watched anything like these two animes before unless you watched them. They are truly unique and fucking awesome.
Kaiji is 10/10.
Akagi would be 11/10 but it just abruptly ends at the apex of the build up of the final act and we dont see what happens. I think they ended it correctly in the manga but ran out of money or something for the anime. Its still fucking amazing though. Akagi would be in my top 5 animes.

I am a filthy casual when it comes to anime tbh. The last couple mushroom trips I've had I've re-watched some of the greats like Akira and Princess Mononoke and I found them so beautiful and profound, lots of food for thought. Made me realize I should explore some more anime.
Could anyone recommend some others that are more cerebral and thought-provoking like that? Something you might throw on for a mushroom movie night? Preferably a long-format type of story or movie, but all suggestions welcome.

Redline. It’s about the death race. I thought it was great. I don’t know why people don’t know about this.
Have you seen Elfen Lied? They made a dead space movie that I actually thought was good. If you’ve ever played the video game, it was really good.
I’m really trying to find a movie for you and I can’t find the name of it. It’s about this kid who comes back to spend time with his grandparent who’s dying. And then all this technology starts acting crazy around them. Because it turns out it’s actually being haunted by his grandmother.super cool movie. I cannot find the title.
I can put up a review for it later.
If you want to get more cerebral, though. And you don’t mind shedding a tear. Metropolis. I thought that was a really good one.
Animatrix. I don’t know how I haven’t put a review up for that. I’ll put one of those up later.

Thankyou so much! I have not seen Elfen Lied, no - and I'm definitely a Dead Space fan. I'll check them all out. I definitely don't mind a little heaviness while I trip, I'm all about the feelz.
