It’s amazing how delicate those blades are to be fair. You hit the bottom of a glass petri too hard, that’s it! You’re blade is bent, good luck trying to skewer an agar chunk with that thing! Even though I’ve been an advocate for ‘use that shit til it’s black and burnt’ I’d probably have to back track and say use the thing until you can’t comfortably skewer an agar wedge.
Alternatively, don’t listen to me at all, that normally works out pretty well too in my experience

To be fair, from 2016 - 2019 I used one blade on an exacto knife. One. I've seen less rust and corrosion under trucks from Minnesota.
Anyway, swap that shit.

I'm not sure why, but my cult season is during the winter/spring. This year I have to deal with low temps in the house. Also, for no good reason, I start from scratch every year.
So this is some cube I'm calling OFC (old fridge clone). It came from a dry shard from a paper sack in the fridge, maybe last year's. Sorry about the picture quality, they were only meant for my records.
Sample went to agar on 12-1. Grew into this 30 days later 12-30.

A week later, all transfers were drowning in bacteria. 1 plate had a dot of non-bacteria in the center of the bacterial soup. I kept it to observe. A month later, 1-27 it looks like it wants to live.

Here it is today, a week later. It has overgrown most of the bacteria. When backlit I can see bacteria squishing out in places.

I'm going to give it another week to stretch out a bit before transfer. Maybe I'll be able to start growing something besides jello molds this month. Fingers crossed.

It ain’t gotta be frugal that drives you, sometimes we get attached to things. The last time I swapped my blade I used the new one for one session and promptly swapped back, something about that fresh blade just felt wrong…

If you were going to take a transfer, where would you take it from? If this thing "wants to live", and managed to fight off bacteria, I'd think the very center of that growth would be the most bacteria free? I'm thinking the normal "at the very edge for the growth" would not count here as it is in touch with the bacteria covering the plate?
Good luck moving beyond the jello this month

I wouldn’t trust a culture with that much bacteria under it. I’d probably needle biopsy the fluffier parts and give it a ride on water agar before taking it back to a regular plate.
Have you done this before? Good results?

LadysKnight does not need to do a needle biopsy - a pair of tweezers is all that is needed. LadysKnight, time to put your money where your mouth is? Revenge is sweet

Normally I wouldn't pursue something this bad, but like I said, starting with zero viable growth for the season, I throw everything at the wall and see what sticks first. And working with cold temps is doubling the wait. Spores not germinating, cakes and pucks terribly slow.
I plan to take samples from here to teagar, back to agar. This has worked before. When backlit I can see some clean edges. In a week i will have enough room for the scalpel. If this were mold I wouldn't try it.
I was going to tweeze it out of the middle as a baby, but it wouldn't stop growing, so here we are.

I've seen BRF agar recommended quite often when it comes to eliminating bacteria. I'm sure you've considered that already, but I'm curious if it's likely to work in this situation?

While brf agar is a solid recipe, I haven't found it to have much effect on bacteria. It is great for germinating spores tho. Brf cakes and pucks otoh, are known bacteria chokers.

If youve got dirty spores I also highly recommend BRF pucks.
