A question for those of you doing sterilized wood chips in filter patch bags; how long does a bag take to fully colonize? These bags are from 1-14 and seem pretty solid. I was just going to let them hang out inside for another couple weeks but noticed this yellowing growing on top of a few of them. anyhow 10 bags of chips going outside today!

Not sure how active this thread is, but I'll try.
My current plan is as follows -
1. Inoculating grain with cyanescens spore syringe (likely Sporeworks but any other recs are appreciated). *** I understand this is risky to do without growing out on agar first...just not sure if I have the time to learn and implement that as I'd like to have my mulch beds ready by April ***
2. Take grain and mix with pasteurized HWFP in three 2 gallon buckets.
3. Take colonized spawn in buckets and mix it outside ('lasagna' style) with wood chips and cardboard (I'm assuming these materials don't need to be pasteurized at this point) in a sectioned off, north-facing part of my garden bed.
4. Keep moist and wait for November rain in the PNW.
I'm very new, with only a couple gourmet grows under my bed. Please be kind, thanks.

Nope, no spores to grain.
If you're going to skip agar, go with PF Tek. Break those cakes up into wood chips, not pellets.
Always skip the cardboard, just inoculate a 2-4" deep chip bed with your spawn.
Above all else, learn to use agar. It's not actually that hard to do and absolutely changes what you can accomplish.
Shortcuts in this hobby will cost you greatly.

Going to get this caerulipes to grain soon.

Been having a good think on what I wana do with em. For sure I’ll be doing simple patch on the side of the house. But my good friend informed he’s going to be tree trimming this year when he’s in town for the spring and is keeping his eye out for some good maple, oak, birch logs. Something is telling me I gotta at least try and plug these guys in on some. I’m already doing more shiitake this year so why not? thinkin I’ll do some small ones to start maybe 2in diameter in a few of all wood types, if it works great and if not what’s a little wasted time..
I got dreams now, my buddy a few hours away is going to be dropping some trees on his property in a year or two. We were going to plug em up with gourmets but I’d love to mix some of these In if viable.

Good looking culture kirkeng and good idea, I think this is probably a viable option for P. makarorae also, it always fruits directly from small branches of southern beech trees here in NZ, I'll prepare some this year with my inoculation tool I made for use with sawdust spawn.

So Ive got 4 jars of azurescens and 4 jars of cyanescens finishing up. Going to shake maybe tomorrow or the next day. They should be ready a week from then.

I want to grow outdoors in the NYC area. Im planning on spawning to alder wood chunks. How should I go about this? Do the woodchunks have to be prepped in any special way? Do I just mix the grains with wood chunks? Do I need to wait for a certain month? Ive never grown outdoors and id really like to get this right the first time.

Thanks, and shit that’s good to know I’ll keep that in mind once my makarorae grows out! Also that tool is super clean well done. I’ll see if my friends working the grounds at the university can trim some of the beech there for me.

You're welcome, I hope your P. makarorae cultures do well, thank you so much, I have used the tool for inoculating Shitake logs and also Hericium novae-zealandiae, it works well 😀 I think P. weraroa could also be worth a try.
I'm currently trialing some small containers with 50% beech smoking chips (Fagus) and 50% PF substrate with my P. makarorae LC cultures, it will be interesting to see if the Fagus is any good, southern beech trees are of a different genus but are related so I guess we'll find out.

Oh man even more excited Weraroa is headed my way, guess I’m doing a lot more logs this year than intended! I’ve been considering getting one of those tools, I used a buddies a couple years ago and man it was so much smoother than banging in plugs. Maybe in the future still got a lot of plugs laying around I should use up first.
Hopefully your experiment does well, look forward to seeing the results!

10 jars added to 10 bags of sterile-ish chips this afternoon. My wife thinks I’ve lost my mind but I’m having a great time with all this.😁
with any luck i’ll have some pictures of fruit to post this fall.

Aspect, what are your room temps like? We keep our house 60-65* and quart jars have been taking around 1 month for those varieties. Maybe genetics? Who knows. Very cool all the same!👍

68-73F. I had some cultures growing very slow on agar. Naturally I used the faster ones for grain jars. The slower cultures probably wouldve taken a month. Theyve grown similar to cubes so far. Slightly different looking myc on agar.

I've been having trouble PC'ing XL filter patch bags of wood chips.
I put 9lbs of boiled wood chips in each bag, and only one of those bags can fit in a 23-quart Presto PC, as well as an AA931. I could possibly make smaller bags and stack 2-high in the AA931, but it seems just as efficient to run the pressure cookers with only 1 bag in each, with 9 lbs of wood chips.
The problem I'm having is because the bags dont fill the space in the pressure cooker, the bags expand outward and even though it is packed full of jar rings, the plastic stretches and pushes outwards through the center of the rings. If/when it stretches enough and touches the wall of the PC, holes get burned in the bags.
If I pack a PC full, spawn bags come out beautiful, sealed, and re-usable. So I'd like to go towards that, without stepping down to smaller spawn bags packed more tightly, like I've done before for other woodlovers
