I used to have at least 2k in the bank at all times that I didn't touch.
Since the end of November Ive probably had one week where I actually got 40 hours. We don't work on major traffic holidays or the days around them and there's been a lot of rain recently (construction).
Between inflation and that, pretty much all my paychecks are going to bills and a lot of our other expenses are going on credit cards. I can actually remember a time when 100 dollars bought a lot of food if you were shopping wisely.
Inflation/shrinkflation is definitely a major factor in it too. This time of year is always bad at my company, but I've never had to start putting groceries on credit cards before.

Maybe we need to make another thread: ‘The shroomery guide to surviving inflation and the downfall of society as we know it’
It will have tips, graphs, guides, shamanic perspectives, etc.. Maybe even a cookbook!

Dude, i'm genuinely poor. Never owned a motor vehicle in my life, never been on holiday, shoveling oatmeal, wearing work clothes.
Life for me is very different from life in holland, i'm on 75% of the social minimum income due to disability.
All this prepping for worse times makes more sense now, yes?
Dude!! Go on holiday!! You deserve to have all those things. Lord knows you’re smart as a whip and by virtue of intellect alone could probably procure a musk-ish level of wealth.
At least I hope you’re doing exactly what makes ya happy, and if not now will be soon

Great idea! It will be a multi-forum crossover thread (Money Matters, The Pub, Culinary Arts, Physical and Mental Health) that could benefit a lot of people

Man these times have really tested us financially. We recently have received about 2-3k in unexpected medical bills from an MRI we went in for. The MRI sent to our insurance cost $13,000, and they paid about 6k of that, leaving us to pay for 20% of the remaining 6K. Then there were some other prep bills that came in totaling close to the above.
Fortunately the MRI showed as promising news as we can hope for, and thats the thing to be most grateful for. But also I realized how years and years of being really mindful of our budget has prepared us for unforseen costs like these. When I really started to think about digging deep to cover these costs I didnt have to dig far before realizing were good. Inflation is a bitch, and I think medical stuff is up on the list of things that costs way more than it probably should (like really how does 45 minutes on an MRI machine equate to $13,000?), but I think having a solid plan and budget compounds on itself over years and years and can set people up to weather storms like the one currently upon us, and the greater inflation storm upon us all.

The US is being gouged terribly for medical expenses. It's organised corruption between insurance companies and medical providers, in any other country but a "free" one it would be illegal.
It's the most expensive in the world while in terms of outcomes is rated 11th. Someone's getting rich and it's a crime that targets the vulnerable.

Yes.
I don't have a solution for the US' healthcare problem, however I have always thought that the medical profession being pro-profit was a bad idea. It just seems incompatible with the purpose of caring for people and treating their illnesses.

It is. If you don't have the cash to pay for it yourself or good insurance then you will be lucky to even get a "good luck soldier".

The solution is to remove the for profit part. You shouldn’t be charged money after you were found dying and brought to a hospital. I can’t even imagine another place in the world where we have this much money and we are still forcing people to lose their houses because of cancer treatment.
Free healthcare. Honestly, the government can afford it they’re just pretending they can’t because it’s making them billions of dollars. I’m sick of it.
