I finally have a few zap projects in the rotation. This is a wild print from Xalapa, Veracruz. The first few MS cultures have been fussy and abort prone. This flush is behaving a bit better, but still a ways to go until the finish line:

Looking very nice elpico, what does your substrate and casing consist of and a bit about the preparation?

Sure thing, inski. The sub is my go to for zaps: 50 percent chopped straw. 50 percent PF substrate. A bit of of compost and CaCO3 mixed in. inoculated with about 2 ml of LI. Casing is 50 percent verm, 25 cactus soil, 25 buffered peat.

Excellent, thanks for sharing, I'm currently in the middle of preparing a similar substrate, I was doing 50% chopped straw, 25% horse manure and 25% brf/verm which I want to try with a couple of species I'm working with but unfortunately my power has gone out, I may be staying up all night tonight 😀

Ahhh 😫 my power went out the other night during a winter storm. I was just getting ready to pour agar too and boom pitch black lol. Then I went ahead and locked my keys in my truck while it was running 😂 🤦♂️

Oh no, terrible, well my power is still out and I may end up trashing the substrate I have sitting in a bucket, I haven't looked at it yet this morning but it won't surprise me if it's green.
I was also planning to isolate monokaryons for a breeding project, if I can't do that within the next day or so the plates will grow out too much and it won't be possible which will be a real setback.

Second flush an improvement on the first
[/image]
Things I’ll try doing differently next time -
A more varied substrate, this was just coir Try to maintain a higher temperature Leave longer to colonise substrate before casing Case a bit thinner/more sparsely
The first flush in the end was shitloads of tiny fruits that didn’t get big. I’m hoping doing some of the above will help me to get better fruits first flush.
I’m testing another culture of these that didn’t fruit at all yet. This good one though, everywhere the casing has touched got pins, including where it’s fallen down the side of the bag.

Those stems and nipples. Just gorgeous, classic zapo.

You’ll definitely have to report back on your experience! I may just put some of these to agar today actually! You say you used just coir as your substrate for that last grow? Seemed pretty happy!

Yep 100% coir. Try to isolate a few cultures if possible. As I said one of mine does not want to fruit at all but this one did great.
What strain of Zaps do you have? These are La Martinica.

You’d have to ask @supa as he sent me the vial. Infact, good question. Any ideas bud?

I have La Martinica and work on Cinco Palos, Encinal 2 (from wild spores) and Tapalpa. Hope to have Cinco Palos this month, Encinal 2 in March and Tapalpa in April.

I got one from him as well but no origin when we talked back and forth. If MycoCapo is the same person that Im thinking, they'll be Texolo. But Im speculating haha. Always trying to nail down region of origin for all specimens.

Mycocapo is who you think probably . I received them from him as wedges. Unfortunately they could be one of two: either Texolo or La Martinica. He sent me two microcentrifuges. I have them spawned now and was hoping to be able to differentiate them once fruited. However, at the time I sent a few out, I had no idea they could be of two different varieties. So for the people who I have sent these unknown varieties to, I would love to send confirmed varieties as an apology if you’d like. I have Cinco Palos, La Martinica, Tapla, Encinal 2, and Jalisco (hopefully germinating soon)

Sorry for the waffle but since my texolo was a print, Im kind of leaning towards possibly La Martinica. Ill be running them next month and Ill update any findings. No worries at all Supa, just happy to have them to toy with!
