Coir Prep - All Stripped Down 28

Today we will be going over making the Shroomery’s favorite substrate: The Pan Pacific Cocoir Blaster. Experiencing this tek is said to be like having your hydration bashed in by a slice of enigma fruit wrapped around a large, dry brick of brown pith. The effects, however, provide your spawn a great, moist, matrix to slurp upon and grow heavy and fat.It is simple enough that, yes, even you can do it, and if you do it correctly you won't even need to remember to bring your towel. You will need the following:1. Coir 2. A 5 Gallon Bucket 3. Water. Tap is fine. 4. Some way to heat water 5. A Scale if you have large bricks of coir This is a brick of coir. This particular brick is made by Coco Bliss. The box says it is 650g, but this is a lie. For the general demonstration, we will be using this brick. Place the brick inside the bucket. Now bring 3 quarts of water to a boil. Looking at the box of Coco Bliss, if your brick of coir is slightly larger than the others, add a splash of extra water. Maybe a half cup or so. If the brick is smaller than the others, maybe reduce your water by a half cup or so. Once your water is boiling, dump it into the bucket with the brick of coir. Lid the bucket and leave it to cool overnight. Congratulations! You have hydrated your coir. To test for field capacity, mix the contents of your bucket until homogenized. Make sure to get the bottom and top of the coir mixed. The brick should have expanded and become fluffy and easy to break up. Now that the moisture is evenly distributed, grab a handful and squeeze it firmly. A little water should dribble out and then stop. If no water comes out, add a quarter cup at a time until it does. If water flows freely, you can mix in vermiculite a cup at a time until it absorbs the excess. If you do not have vermiculite, sorry bud, but you're squeezing that water out by hand. Now let's pretend you have a big chunk of coir. Some sort of bulk, Vogon constructor ship shaped thing. You're going to need to chip some off with a hammer and chissel/screw driver. The forumula for hydrating bulk coir, and even bricks if you want to go that rout, is to multiply the grams of coir you have by 4.6 and convert that to water in milliliters. Grams x 4.6 = Water in mLExample: Ford Prefect has 100g of dry coir that he wants to hydrate. 100g x 4.6 = 460ml. Simple as. OUTLIERS: some of you may try this tek and experience problems. Maybe you check the bucket the next day and your brick is still solid. Maybe you follow the equation and your substrate is wildly over hydrated. Remember this: NOT ALL COIR IS CREATED EQUAL. It, like everything in this hobby, is made batch to batch. There’s no real tek for adaptability. The more you do something, the easier it is to identify problems and make appropriate changes. In this way, problems are opportunities to sharpen your skillset. Meet them with a smile and a handshake. Final Thought:Field capacity is a spectrum. The formula above will ensure consistency across batches, but just know that if you're like this retard and you're eyeballing everything IT IS OK as long as it passes the squeeze test. Coco coir holds a ton of water. It can be perfect if you're using a scale and math, but if you don't have a scale and you're an idiot you can get as close as you need to be by educated guess and a firm squeeze. So if you don't have a scale it's nothing to stress about. Repetition is the steward of learning. In short

I think you should note that your multiplier of 4.6 is brand specific. I use Eco Earth and I only need 3.5x water.
Otherwise, nice guide on watering a brick.

Ive used this formula now for about 2 months and i have to say 4.6 is truly the magic number. Great guide Smelly.

This 4.6 ratio seems like a terribly low amount of water.
700g brick means 3200ml of water if I'm following correctly? 3.4 quarts especially with verm added is tremendously low amount for cocobliss coir. Probably would barely see a drip come out with squeeze test.
More so than anything it's strain variable for some are heavy drinkers and need it. I have this Melmac that if I use 4qt water 10lb of sub it will only yield 4oz or so, but as soon as I go to 5qt still 10lb it will yield 6.
Some strains don't have as much demand, substrate is an art and should be tailored to specific strains
Squeeze test for me only one or two drops coming out is dry as hell
A few drops to potentially a small stream is average
A stream for a brief second or 2 is above average
Any more and it's ruined

Thank you for simple and up-to-date instructions
How long does prepped sub last? I’m planning to spawn one quart to a shoebox next week, then a monotub after the new year. Should I just chisel off enough coir for one shoebox (I’d like about 3 quarts of sub)?

Coir in a bucket can last over a year

Sorry i feel dumb for asking that but i cant find another post asking that question. Im planning my first tub atm and i always heard 1:4 ratio with spawn to bulk. And im planning to do it with this method but i came to the problem will coir absorb all of the water weight? To put my question to numbers for example if i have 100g of coir and i add 450 ml will my coir have a weight of 550 after that or will some water get lost along the process? I feel like this is a dumb question because nobody asked it before but i just dont want to make to much or to small amount of coir for my tubs.

Water loss should be minimal to nonexistent
