Is it expected that yield is lower on coco coir than compared to straw?
    #28642921 - 02/01/24 01:04 PM (3 months, 13 days ago)

I am doing a grow of oysters on coco coir, instead of my normal grow on straw. The yield seem to be significantly lower (current fruit seems to be much smaller and already almost ready to harvest).

Is it expected that yield is lower on coco coir than compared to straw?

And could I add/ is it worthy to add a supplement to coir?

i recall someone saying that cococoir has very little nutrition for a saprophytic mushroom that wants to eat lignen and cellulose.  so there's not much food for the myc.  i'd say to just start with straw or hwfp rather than try supplementing coir.

Thanks. I googled on lignin and coir, and actually was astonished that coir has quite some nutrional value.

"
Coconut coir is lignocellulose material which contains hemicellulose (0.25%), cellulose (43.44%), lignin (45.84%), pectin (3.00%) and water (5.25%).

and about wheat:
"
Wheat straw contains 35–45% cellulose, 20–30% hemicelluloses, and around 15% lignin, which makes it an attractive feedstock to be converted to ethanol and other value-added products.

And then I found this thread: https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/27176884/page/1.

I will try out something in the future with coco coir (more spawn and or supplementing), and in the mean time focussing on my problem with straw (which is that I can't yet avoid that my kitchen is a mess for 2 days), and get rid of that problem.

You could try straw pellets if you have them available nearby. No mess, no need for pasteurization nor sterilization. Easy to store big volumes.

Oh that's a good one! Thanks. I might try that out soon.
