Coco coir
    #28642441 - 01/31/24 09:30 PM (3 months, 14 days ago)

I've been using midwest bulk substrate for my grain every one has gotten trich.
Would coco coir prevent this? I've been successful with jars but when I went to bulk growing my success rate went to zero.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

I've also had major trich issues with manure substrate and consistent success with PF Tek cakes. Dang trich must be everywhere in my home.  My searches of these threads leads me to believe that grows can be successfully done on coir with optional coffee added.  I believe coir does not provide growth nutrients for trich and I've used it successfully as a moisture base in my tubs for PFTek.  Like you, I'm searching these threads for Coir Tek.

From what I've gleaned from my searches I will attempt a grow that mixes in my crumbled/chunk PFTek spawn heavily with field capacity coir/w coffee to 3" deep.  Adding a layer no more than 1/2" of straight FC coir on top. Then seal in shoebox and see what happens.

Please message me if you find something more informational on this topic.

Cheers and Good Luck!

You do not need to add anything but water to coir.
Check out the link in my signature.

rsk1970 do you have a picture of the spawn? Most contamination issues don't arise when using clean spawn. I've personally never used midwest bulk substrate but I do grow only using grain, coir and tap water.

tubs are spawned in non-sterile conditions - all sorts of nasty stuff including thousands of trich spores gets mixed in. healthy mycelium fights off invaders and provides no uncolonized grains for the mold to germinate on. with coir, contamination before the first flush is 99% of the time because it was hiding in your jars.

Use cocobliss. I was using the Mother earth coir and almost every single one got trich after first flush till i switched. They do inject some trich into it for plants.

All unavoidable with all kinds of coir if you break up the coir into small pieces in a bucket, then dump boiling water in it, then wrap it up in a cotton flannel sleeping bag for 4hrs. Comes out still 165°F after that all mold spores are destroyed.

I like using a "ice chest" and most people have a spare ice chest they can spare for some coir.
