I've read to test LC out on agar before using it - but HOW?
Take a sterile q-tip, dip it in the LC, swab that on agar and wait? THANKS IN ADVANCE!
Hi Threads2theSoul.
I recently had a run-in with bad LC too - see here:
https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/28604099
I had some practical challenges with just squeezing a drop or two of liquid onto an agar plate. There are at least three reasons I can think of:
1 - My big old thumb is too strong and way too enthusiastic, and does not want to squeeze just a little. All in, or nothing!
2 - I made 20ml syringes for storing LC. Moving the plunger on one of those even a little causes many drops, so I ran into that problem testing syringe LCs.

3 - The plungers on my syringes seem to be stuck a little at first (maybe cheap stuff?), so they "slip" when I push the plunger at first, drowning my agar plate. Not a problem when knocking up a grain bag, of course, but not good for this fine precision work.
I solved the problem for myself by buying 1ml syringes. Extra money, I know, but now I can draw up the snotty stuff in just 0.2ml:

This means there is so much less liquid in the first place for me to squirt all over my agar plate, and I can make sure I have a ball of myc just-just at the opening of the syringe to the needle (like in the photo), so if I push carefully, I can even manage to get that myc on the plate without all the liquid I drew up in the 1ml syringe, if I can stop my thumb in time And, I find I have more control with this small syringe - I can let my thumb have freedom to move the plunger much further for a single drop. Happy thumb, happy agar!
Hope this helps. I'm new, but it works for me and I hope it gives you at least one new option in your toolbox.
Kind regards

Getting to this post late but 5 gallons of oats weighs 20 pounds.

Unless you have something crazy you are really proud of just go ahead and do it. You only have 88 posts and that's not a lot to lose. I don't think you lose anything anyway it's just still posted under your old name, so your first 88 posts will only be searchable under that old name. It's no big deal at all at the point you are at now.

This sold it! Name stays.
What a waste of everyone's time. Thought about it - a little self-centeredness there - think it was a stupid attempt to "fly the gang colors" by having a cute name. I'll rather join the gang by contributing and earning my spurs. So far I'm nett taking, so I guess I feel a little guilty, but that's just natural learning. Soon I'll start knowing enough to help other noobs.
Good growing, all, and thanks for humoring this little silliness.

How many quarts of spawn are people running in 27qt monos?
Starting APEs, Subtropicalis, and Nats in the next few days. Trying to decide how much spawn I need for each. Running all three in 27qt monos.

You could get away with 1 myco-quart but I'd probably do at least 2-3 qrts

My 27qt tubs get 2 qts spawn and a half brick of coir and are pinning in 12 days

Cool. I was thinking three on the APEs and Nats with a three to four inch sub. Two quarts for the subtropicalis and two to three inch of substrate.

The 27 qt tubs have a similar footprint, just taller so they don't need to be dubbed if the fruits get tall.
I'm currently fruiting Tamps in 12qt dubs. If I had made this connection before reading your post I might not have asked my question lol

I been using 27qt tubs for a long time now. I like them more then shoeboxes or the big monos. They stack nice and no need for dub tubbing.

27qt tub with 3 qts spawn. Sub like 2.5in deep

But this is how tall they can get with 3 in sub so mine doesn’t need to be super deep

Yeah, I got tired of fucking around with dubs so most of them will be repurposed for organization.
Spent a bit last night comparison shopping. It was between container stores tall shoe boxes and sterilites 27 qts.
In the end, I didn't want to spend a $100 for free shipping, so a new grow light and four 27qt totes from Walmart for like $50 was what I went with.

Which ones do you use, and what’s the height on them if you don’t mind? I’d switch to those maybe if they’d fit in the cabinet

During my first flush, I kept spraying the substrate at least twice per day because it looked perpetually dry once the fruits started growing. It just kept absorbing water and I must've sprayed around 100ml/day for around 4 days straight (onto 5L of substrate). I was looking out for those tiny beads of water as a sign to stop, but they never appeared.
There were no puddles at any point, but after my final misting (2 days ago) it did take a couple of hours for it to fully absorb. That's when I realized that I must've waterlogged my fruits and substrate which probably contributed to my small fruits problem if various older threads are to be believed. Yesterday's harvest dried down to just around 6% of wet weight.
Does anyone know why beads of water stopped forming and if there are any other easy ways to tell whether the substrate is at the right moisture level? I'm still trying to get to grips with when and how much to mist. That's how it looks today:

Forgive a few decapitated pins and uprooted coir, my harvesting technique needs some work.
