Mr Piggy said: I'm confused why people would use desiccant packs in a sealed mason jar. If your mushrooms are going into the jar cracker dry and getting sealed, where is this magical moisture coming from?
I live in an extremely humid environment and have mushrooms last for years by just getting them cracker dry and sealing them in mason jars
There is air in the jar when you close it. The mushrooms will slowly absorb and equalize with the moisture content in the air. I agree its a very slow process but I've opened a jar with an oz of cracker dry shrooms after 1 year and it was fine. Opened the same jar after a second year and they had become a little bit bendy.
Would you toss em back in the dehydrator is you discovered this?
I gotta stop opening my jars lol
Just wana make sure they still in there
I would just put them in a jar with extra silica (desiccant) packets. All that FAE from the dehydrator cant be good for oxidation.

Friends , making uo some pf tek brf cakes today for sterilisation. So.... its a 2, 1 ,1 vermiculite to water to brf ratio right ?
Mix water plus vermiculite first then BRF or does it matter?
Any other good tips for success?

I always mix the dry ingredients then the wet and it’s always been fine, maybe there’s a proper way but as long as they mix consistently.

Follow the ratio and don’t deviate. The current tek mentions squeezing your mixture to test for field capacity. Don’t lol. Just follow that ratio.

Yes, it matters, mix the verm and water first. As was already said, just follow the ratio, and keep in mind that being somewhat under field capacity is definitely better than being slightly over.

What is a normal harvest from a shoebox? Like, say I just got 370g wet. Isn't that kind of fucking insane?

You want to aim for a dry ounce first flush per quart of spawn. 370g wet is great. I’d hold onto that culture. 29-40g is the sweet spot.

I got 100g dry from a 3lb grow bag this month. Quote:

I may have dried out the substrate in my shoebox by messing about with incubators.
Is their anything to lose by giving it a heavy misting?

No that is precisely the protocol for dry subs. Idk how you’re “incubating,” but do not directly apply heat to your grows. As you have learned, it just dries them out. Heat the room/house. You want to raise ambient temps if they’re critically low. But cubes grow great at room temp.

I’m not sure how much is in a 3lb bag volume wise, tbh

Wait, what?
I thought applying head directly to our grows was the standard protocol.

Haha woopsie.
Yeah only apply head to your grows when you’re ready for them to sporulate.

Last time I was doing shoeboxes I was getting >70g dry on first flush. But I was using 2quarts spawn to 2quarts coir each, uncompressed. When I try again, I plan to run some comparisons with 1 quart spawn to 4 quarts coir, with compression like seems to be the current norm.

It sounds like you had some good genetics. 70g dry from 2 quarts is pretty damn acceptable for a shoebox. I think if you use those same cultures you'll get comparable results with the same setup.

Yeah, just what I could get clean from an ancient B+ print. I like data, and want to try the current methods regardless, but my math tells me I could get the same weight from my old method as I can expect from 2 boxes and save like 6 quarts of coir. But I want to see what the same culture could do with the 2 different methods.

Thanks to this amazing group I harvested my first monotub today and I have all 5 trays of my dehydrator loaded. I wasn't expecting the smell of mushrooms to be so strong while drying... I went out earlier and came back into the shared hallway in our building and that was the first thing I smelled, the neighbors will 100% be able to smell it but I guess only someone who has grown shrooms themselves would know WTF it is...
I don't mind the smell but I was worried about the neighbors so I burned some incense... the combined smell is PUTRID, worst decision ever.. QUESTION: How long will the smell stick around once the drying process is over? Trying not to throw up...

IME it goes away after a few hours. Basically once the dehydrator stops blowing.
If there is a temperature setting on it dropping it down to like 90 degrees may help but then you'll want to be absolutely sure to go the full 24 hours. At 165 you can probably get away with like 16 or 20 hours. Don't quote me on that though.

The smell is worst at the beginning when they are wettest. It starts getting weaker in an hour or two and then gets less and less until they are totally dry. PE varieties are the worst of the worst ime. Highly recommend cracking a window in the dehydrator room or doing it outside or in a garage if possible.
