Re: EvilMushroom666's Take on BRF Cakes [Re: EvilMushroom666]

Count me as another grateful newbie.  Currently on my second try with a set of six 1/2 pint jars almost fully colonized.  First time around netted a few little guys from just two of six cakes.  I had some contamination problems with greenish mold growing on a couple of the others, and a couple just did absolutely nothing at all.  Going to try to adhere to the details a little more conscientiously this time.

Big prob for me was that I am often away from home a couple of days a week, and I most likely overcompensated with misting on the days when I was around. Short of some automatic misting setup, I am not yet sure how to cope with this situation.

I like EvilMushroom's mini-SGFC, very slick. :solidnod:

It keeps the fungus gnats out. It's not needed otherwise, given that you have a proper dry verm layer.

If you use masking tape, I’d suggest replacing with MPT after intial germination at the inoc points… solid tape can cut off GE completely and cause the cakes to stall towards the end of colonization.  Or start with MPT but I’d go two layers, removing one halfway through colonization

There is no need.  The vermiculite layer is your barrier against contaminants.  As stated already, placing solid tape over the inoculation points will stifle gas exchange.
