I'm not on Facebook... but I'm not only a bit of a mushroom nerd.. I'm a professional photographer, and a graphic designer, and I've been working with AI for legit purposes (mainly to make backgrounds for product mockups). More than one of my BS meters started pegging when I saw the image... I think on Instagram the poster cannot delete comments. I'm not the only one who has questioned it over there.
-------------------- Disclaimer - I'm just a hobbyist and cannot absolutely guarantee any ID offered. I'm most familiar with the species found in the Pacific Northwest - those found in other parts of the world may vary considerably, so always do your own research to find out what grows in your area and what lookalikes you need to be aware of. Understand that many mushroom species cannot be 100% reliably identified by photographs alone, even by an expert, so it may not be possible to go beyond suggesting a probable genus.

I see what you mean. On the other hand, it would be one phenomenal way to destroy one's career as a photographer by selling a faked photo to Nat Geo. You pull that shit only once and it's going to be found out. A photographer would have to be suicidal or actively seeking out a new career to do something as stupid as that. It doesn't add up.

Yes, it is a very silly way to ruin one's own career. Yet people do it, they try to take shortcuts. There have been more than one acclaimed nature photographer in my country that has fallen for their own stupidity and tried to cheat people with photoshopped images. The strange thing is they were already acknowledged as great photographers prior to their cheating, so there was in reality very little to gain. These were people who made their claims to fame long before photoshop and similar technologies became available, too.
I guess it is just good old hubris. Maybe combined with fear of becoming redundant.
That being said, I'm still hoping I'm wrong about the Sequoia picture. If it is a real picture, I'm pretty sure he didn't just take one shot, he probably took a series of them to pick the better ones.

Not to be too pedantic Anglerfish, but it’s not a Sequoia it appears to be Douglas fir.

Well, it was actually presented as Sequoia by Burkard himself, if I remember correctly.

Seems unlikely, he also posted a video of the tree. If you look at his other photos this one fits in well with what he does.
They are probably Pleurotus on Douglas fir, and the lighting or post processing makes them look more orange than they were.

This link is to another photo of the same mushrooms without the excessive orange tint on them.

That does look more real... I wonder if he decided to tone down the vibrance boost and repost after so many people questioned the veracity..

Yeah, or maybe it was natgeo that altered his photo. The version that looks too orange is posted on natgeo, but this version (maybe the original?) is on his personal account

That picture does his work more justice. I guess a professional nature photographer is quite dependent on boosting the colors for better effect, although it can boomerang back when questioned by nerds like myself.
I can't find the video though, if there is a link available it would be cool to see.
