Has anyone here taken organic chemistry? Love this class so far. * 2
    #28637422 - 01/27/24 09:01 PM (3 months, 18 days ago)

I love this class so far. It's more of an art class than a science class. Total stark contrast to general chemistry which I HATED more than anything in my entire life. Even the labs are way better. Later we will be isolating caffeine from black tea with sodium hydroxide, something I've actually been wanting to do for some time now.

When I was a young child, my sisters and I would visit my grandparents during school breaks and my grandpa was a medical doctor. We would go to work with them. My grandma was his receptionist so it worked out fine. I would sit in his office and he had multiple volumes of "The Physician's Desk Reference" which was this HUGE book with almost every prescription drug you can think of. It showed the chemical formula, bond line structure, and lots of chemical properties of the drugs. I didn't know what any of it meant, but I loved looking at the pictures of the bond line structures because I just thought it was interesting.

THEN, in high school as a teen (circa 2000), I would look up on the internet for fun, bond line structures for illegal drugs, THC, cocaine, LSD, heroin, etc etc etc. Still, at the time, I didn't know what any of it meant but I just liked looking at the pictures of the bond line structures because I just thought they looked cool.

Now I'm learning what it all means and how to draw the honeycomb structures and it's all coming together now. This has got to be the funnest art class I've ever taken. I bought special honeycomb "graph" paper from ebay to make it easier to draw the structures because I don't quite get the right shape when I'm doing my problems in the textbook, but the professor says that's normal for people just starting to draw bond line structures.

Anyone here taken organic chem? What did you think of it? How did you do? Got any pointers?

My professor is pretty cool, this tall skinny dude who wears a cool golf hat. He lectured about the carboxyl group and I raised my hand and asked (although I knew the answer already) if the carboxyl group is what's responsible in cannabinoid precursors like thca, cbda, etc. (A few people turned their heads and looked at me when I asked that) He didn't know how to answer my question and said he'd have to look into it. I told him that when you "decarboxylize" the marijuana or hemp, you get rid of the carboxyl group. He mentioned something about CO2 being released when that happens. He told the class he was more of a synthetic chemist (does research on polymers and polymer precursors) than a biochemist.

Anyway.

Ive never taken an organic chem class but I have taken a psycho-pharmacology and bio-psychology class which had some organic chemistry in it. I also once briefly read an organic chem text book, just for fun.

Enjoy! Organic chemistry is an awesome subject! I highly recommend it for everybodiez :awehigh: :happyweed: :nerd:

Although most of the subject youre learning evades my capacities for learning, i am jelly that you get to study something i couldnt grasp, but im happy you like it man :manofapproval:

Nah, but I may in the future as I gear up to (finally) finish by B.S. It's not really necessary in my major, which is more concerned with calculus, statistics and algebra. I would like to take some physics and chemistry if I have the brain capacity and time for it, organic chemistry seems awesome, but difficult, and I don't want to set myself up to struggle more than necessary while also working full time.

I remember taking this class where we had to guess the molecular structure from some kind of spectro-graph thingie.  Forgot the name but it was hella fun.

I took chemistry in high school. Never finished that course and passed math 10 with 50.1%
Really not into math.

There's a good book called "Organic Structures from Spectra" by Leslie D. Field, Sev Sternhell, and John R. Kalman; I like to think of it as a fun puzzle book.

The book is filled with hundreds of problem sets where you have to solve the chemical structures from the spectra provided.
It is very like what you would do in a research lab where you develop a brand new molecule and have to solve its structure from all the different analyses piece-by-piece until all the pieces agree with each other.

I studies organic chemistry.  Its very interesting but it gets real hard, real fast.

By the end of february you won't like it so much.

Gen chem had too many huge word problems with lots of information and it got real confusing fast. Only about 5% of the info from gen chem 1 and 2 is actually needed for organic chemistry.

I like that there's barely any math in organic. The only math I've had to do is count 1 electron up or down depending on the charge, and just making sure each element has the appropriate number of bonds and lone pairs.

So today in lab we had to record temperatures of the melting points of different acids.

This small asian girl who sits next to me in lab asks me, "Are you on the acid yet?"

And I say to her, "Oh I wish I was on acid."

I don't think she got the joke....BUT....I did finish faster than most people, so, I guess I was "on that acid" in this case.

I guess everyone in that lab was on acid at one point.

LOVE the low key drug chemistry jokes!

Have you blown up any glassware yet?

In all of general chemistry one and two and this class I have not broken any glass.

The cheap hot plates they have takes 2 hours to boil fucking water.

There'll be plenty more opportunities.

See if you can make some chlorine gas; shouldn't be too difficult with the materials you used for chapter 3. No need to wait for 10 with this one. It'll spice up the place real good.

Hey does anyone have any resources that would teach me how to choose the correct reagent to protonate a molecule?
