Hello friends, im a looooong time lurker. Prob 10 plus years haha. This is my first post so hello! Quick question, I have some p. Mexicana going on agar. MSS straight to PDA. I have made a couple different transfers of different looking sectors. Id like one to run one for fruits and one for sclerotia. One is forming little sclerotia on the plate. I read that thats the part you want to transfer. My sclerotia is tiny, about 1x1 mm. Do I slice the whole thing out and transfer that? Or should I transfer a tiny piece of the sclerotia itself?
As for the other plate, I chose the fastest growing section of myc, no sclerotia forming in this plate but as I said im shooting for fruits with this one. First time with P. Mexicana, any quick tips appreciated! Introductory post coming later

If you’re having trouble getting spores to transfer from older swabs (or newer I suppose) to the agar, you can use a blank sterile swab and rub against the spot of the swabs with spores before streaking. That’ll help dislodge them so they end up on the agar

I have 8 BRF jars ready for inoculation, prepared them yesterday morning, and I am undecided which variety to go with, nats or cubes. I really want to go with nats this time, but I am a bit afraid of getting overlay. Should I just go with it anyway and just pray to the Shroom Lords?

How tall can I expect a monotub full of Golden Teachers to get? This is my first tub grow. My previous grow was a grow in a bag of golden teachers. Some of those were quite large. I harvested these today as they were opening up and veils splitting. Biggest one was maybe 3” tall. Is that normal?

Most shoeboxes get enough FAE with the lid on. If there are beads of moisture all over the surface of your tub then do not mist. If it is dry, most gently from 3 feet or so above until beads but not puddles form.

In all seriousness, despite low visibility, it’s less expensive and very easy to use 1/2 pint jars as petris. No, you can’t see super well into them, but you’ll be opening them to do work anyway. That’s an actual practical glass solution if you don’t want to use plastic 👍
100mm glass plates are $1.70ea in a 20pk at the major online retailer. Close to the same price as half pints in my area.
My glass plates are about $10/ea.😬

I feel like my shoebox is stalling. It has looked like this since the last time I posted (6 days ago). I am using the SFF Shoebox tech

I know I need to be patient, and that things are probably fine. My previous grows used shredded BRF instead of Rye, so maybe it's just that.
Am I correct in thinking that I just need to let is sit?

They must be super fancy. I know they make super thick ones from name brand special glass, but truly, mine are made from the cheapest thinnest Chinese trash glass and I may break one a year. I would be pretty upset to break a $10 plate.

I thought the same about mine, it colonized nicely for the first week, then it didn't seem to be doing anything the next week. Around day 14 it started pinning like crazy.

Lets pretend i have a year old print on foil that i wanted to put on agar.
Should i make a syringe first in order to rehydrate the spores or is scraping with a scalpel enough and the agar provides enough moisture to rehydrate them?

Ya thats a solid flush, they wont get much bigger than that once veisl start breaking and they mature. Some genetics just have smaller first flushes. Shorter denser fruits are nothing to scoff at tho! lol I know we all wnaa see monsters but small mushrooms are great too, often more potent in my experience. In the winter , with colder temps i often see alot shorter denser fruits. In the heat of summer with higher humidity too ialways get longer fruits. SO its def a mix of genetics and environmental factors.
Subsequent flushes will throw larger fruits as time goes on.
