Hello! Plastic Petri gang.

A while back someone sent me a culture in a big ass glass dish. Like for free and without request, which was pretty sick.

I used that glass Petri to work with that one culture and then never again because it was such a huge pain in the ass to deal with. Idk if it was the SAB being too restrictive or what. Also wrapping it was difficult. After using it a few times it got bad contam because it was too unwieldy to properly use.

Now am I retarded? Probably. That is probably the explanation. But plastic petris are 1) way lighter and therefor easier to work with 2) incredibly easy to wrap and 3) when they come out of the fridge the exterior doesn’t get so wet that cling wrap refuses to stick to it like the glass one did.

I would PREFER glass, if it performed identically. If I had a flowhood I probably wouldn’t even have these complaints, also.

Parafilm brother. You'll never find people in $ labs using cling. cling is for the ghetto.

I find racks less versa-tile than solid surfaces..... :laugh2:

With racks you have lots of blank space between the wires. Blank space does not offer physical support and is limiting to maneuver objects around on.  Some heavy things I handle in the flow would likely break a rack anyway. A rack is 100% pivot points.

SPG does the same and reuses their baggies. I can't bring myself to do that. I did try reusing thick rubber bands, didn't go well. Wet glass plate + slingshot

i dont mean to get into a fight about it. but i still dont understand how people who obviously love mycology - or growing shrooms (if thats what you would call it) - would rather work with disposable petri  dishes when there are durable alternatives and nopour is a 100% certain route to 0 contam?
are you really on such a scale that it doesnt work out otherwise?
just curious..

I think your underestimating just how "guaranteed" regular petris are with good technique. I don't remember ever having a petri contam from bad pouring practices. But you do have a good point that the reusability of PP5 containers is pretty awesome.

No stone casting in here at all please. From either direction. This comment is perceived by me as stone casting and perpetuation therof.

I wholeheartedly endorse reducing or eventually entirely eliminating our plastic manufacture usage and waste. Every bit helps.

I see nothing wrong with my statement.  I think it's good for everyone to remember that we're all implicated in these matters.  I will however refrain from further engagement if you think it's for the better of the thread

Meditation is passive learning. Tabernacling with the one infinite Creator is passive learning. It is the learning from listening to the voice one cannot hear which answers questions which one cannot ask. The process cannot be known and cannot come into consciousness in local sense, yet the learning is there. And the strength of spirit and will which comes from this learning is helpful.

It really depends on the plastic. Many plastics are biodegradable and made of quickly grown plants. But a lot of people just don’t really give a shit about the environment. You’d be amazed how much pollution goes into the manufacture of a glass Petri dish.

I thought it was a joke tbh. That’s true about phones, isn’t it? Both comments.

Bispo growers: what is a rough timeline to see pins? It colonized the substrate suuuuper fast. 3 days from s2b to full colonization. Just curious if there’s a reliable window like with your average cubes

I'm right there with you?

I thought we were all having a good ribbing, and come on, stones in plastic house is funny.

But really, it is very difficult to avoid plastic in this hobby.  One way or another it is going to come into play.  Let's not pretend what we are doing is an environmental net positive or even neutral in any way.  Certainly less impactful than other hobbies, and at least we're tending living things.

I think about the only way to have a net zero impact would be to find a local active and recreate its environment in your yard.  Storm debris/chip beds for us temperate zone folks, poopies for you sub tropical and tropical folks.  Inoculate with stem butts and let em do their thing.

Mine always start to pop about 7-10 days post casing. Could take longer or shorter, but I always bank on about a week-week n a half, and they haven’t let me down yet!

I find it helps, but they’ll grow without one, I’ve personally not ventured into uncased but seems others have had good results without.
