using a vaccume cleaner motor to blow air through a hepa filter
    #28636890 - 01/27/24 12:31 PM (17 hours, 54 minutes ago)

i've managed to create a device that blows air through a hepa filter with an old vacuum cleaner motor that i was hoping to use for mycology work. right now it's a really nice air filter but i was hoping to build a box around it and get laminar flow. im an amateur mycologist who's always up for a bit of unconventional repurposing. driven by my quirky and insatiable curiosity, I found myself on this peculiar quest to repurpose a vacuum cleaner motor for my fungal endeavors so i tried this. while most people might stick to the tried and true lab equipment, I couldn't resist the allure of the humble vacuum cleaner motor's untapped potential. in my infectious enthusiasm, I decided to name my project "operation fungumatic," a whimsical nod to the amalgamation of fungi and automatic ingenuity. has anyone else tried this or think it's a good or bad idea?

one thing to mention is so far the price has been low because i got the vaccume for free and i got the hepa secondhand but new

I mean honestly OP you're prob the only person on planet earth that's ever thought to try this and honestly go for it and report back your results for science

Do you have the specs on the motor and the filter to see if laminar flow is even possible? I think most vacuums have pretty weak motors compared to the ones used for creating laminar flow are pretty beefy.

If curiosity is what's driving you, then of course you want to do it. Will it work for laminar flow? How would we know unless someone is brave enough to risk failing for the sake of satisfying curiosity.

What you need, is to equalize the pressure inside the box before it hits the HEPA filter. You then want this equalized pressure flowing (laminar flow) through the HEPA filter at a rate of about 300 CFM (if I remember correctly. Double check my number, please). Get a particle reader to see if it's working. Check to see if you have laminar flow with a cigarette lighter.

I hope you succeed, but I do not believe that you will get the CFM of air movement that you need to succeed with that sort of motor, but you do do, and see for yourself.

i see now i might not make laminar flow. thx for all the helpful posts it was a fun experiment and i still have a good motor and filter so maybe its time for a proper blower. speaking of blower, maybe ill convert the vacuum fan motor into a suction sex toy for men. a real fun time blower. 29.99 just sign the waiver here.
