Still relevant though I tried doing a search also, maybe vermiculite is the next best option?

It's ok. I was going to answer thinking we were there.
Rice hulls. Haven't made the switch yet myself but it's likely coming down the road.

Piggy, can you compost or find a local gardening group to contribute to? Throw all your food scraps and mushy yard waste in a large pile, feed the bugs and critters, let it hot compost (basically pasteurization), and eventually you'll have your own soil.

No, then you will have compost. Potting mediums or soils are a mix which compost is only one component of. Even in the ground, compost is only a component of soil. Even composting is not as simple as you describe, proper hot composting requires a balance of carbon, nitrogen, and air.

I mean as a compostable aggregate yeah, but are you suggesting it as a holding medium as well? I wouldn't think it could easily grab and hold moisture like coir or peat could.

I did yesterday homie. Dropped a whole (cut and paste another person's hard work) novel on basic soil mixes.

Here's my cultivation confessional. while i sit here unemployed and broke. I Have about 80 agar cups 6 that need to go to lc that I haven't made. rest need disposed of or used for something else.
I HAVE 14lbs of colonized spawn and only 20-25lbs of FC coir... I have tubs already going. I'm barely going to have enough tubs in the best scenario . I would happily give someone A spawn bag Near me lol.....
I have no self control when it comes to scale lol... and keeping it small

Mr Piggy said: Bruh, in the UK and don't know peat? Our collective ancestors weep.
I tried to search up some examples of gardening peat for sale in the UK, but it looks like all sales of peat for gardening were banned starting in 2024?
Can anyone in the UK confirm this?
DEFRA (Government Department for the Environment, Farming and Rural Affairs) announced a ban a year ago. It's only supposed to come in this year, but it's already disappeared at retailers - I guess they don't want to be stuck with stocks they can't sell.
The last time I had real peat was when I was in Isla a couple of years back for the Feis Ile whisky festival. I found a bog they were cutting for making smokey malt, put a couple of blocks in the boot of the car, and left some pound coins to say thanks. I burnt them on an open fire on a cold night whilst sipping Lagavulin, but now wish I'd kept them.
Surely someone in the UK has an alternative??

Funfarm said: Here's a actual cultivation confession not just thought process... I got super paranoid and threw out a healthy cake in the tree line at the park. It was 100% colonized and ready to start pinning. When I came back to reality, I returned to the park salvaged what I could. Only to have lip stick & green trichy mold show up 2 days later at the same time, same cake. While it was a good lesson on how to identify. Yes that really happened
Oh I forgot to add the cobweb mold specimen that showed up too. It was a great model and illustration for mold specimens. Here's the added confessional.... I had to look really cool running down the street with a cracked tub full of mud with holes on the sides, the only other thing I could of done was cry out "mommy! Mommy! Help me, help me" lol, what a tool and a fool.

Today at the grocery store, I made my pasta sauce decision largely based on how well I could repurpose the container for mycology things.

I confess I’ve had months of contam issues due to crappy grain, went and bought 2 bags of Japanese millet only to find it dries out during the pc cycle and more so afterwards in the jars and bags, thinking of just buying and selling grain now for a living 😭
