Help Identity this mushroom (California)
    #28629756 - 01/21/24 11:24 AM (6 days, 7 hours ago)

I found this mushroom (southern California on the coast) on my side yard growing out of some mud/cracks in bricks. Underneath the muddy bricks is tarp and some damp sand, there's also some moss growing on the bricks.

Just wanted some help identifying this mushroom species, thanks.

Do you have any idea how I could encourage further growth of these morels on my side yard? I want to wait till the spores drop and pick them when they're fully ready to increase the chance they'll come back. How can I tell when the spores have dropped on morels?

I just got a good rain in my area and would really love to have another flush or two after they're picked, any advice?

As far as I know, morels are picky. They are not easily cultivated.

So I guess you have a better chance hunting them.

Lay some peat moss or straw to keep moisture in and water gently if you get a dry spell

I just decided to pick these today before they start rotting, I think they got as big as they're gonna get. Ended up getting some pretty large Morel fruit from my side yard!

Any favorite recipes you'd like to share? Not exactly sure how I'll cook them up yet, I was thinking in a pasta dish.

my favorite way to make morels is chicken-leek-goat cheese 'pizza'.. not traditional kind really but a white pizza (no tomato sauce)

Make or buy  a batch of pizza crust or focaccia bread dough.

Slice a couple of leeks into half rounds and gently fry in olive oil, over low/medium low heat until soft

Chop a couple of chicken thighs into small bits, add to leeks. Turn up the heat a little and cook until chicken is done.

Dice morels - fry with chicken and leeks until soft and fragrant. Add salt & pepper to taste. Maybe a little thyme, but don't over do.

Top your dough with this mixture. Top all of that with a generous sprinkling of crumbled soft goat cheese.

Bake until the crust is done and the goat cheese lightly browned. Of course if you've got pasta on the brain - this same mixture would probably go just as nicely tossed with some.

As far as encouraging them to grow... someone I know had some pop up in their landscaping. They said they were able to keep them coming back by spreading wood fire ashes in the area. I'd say if you know someone with a fireplace ask them for a bucket or two of ashes and  give it a try... can't hurt.

Shake mature caps in a water bottle and pour the spore water around.
