Salvaging soggy-ass PF Tek cakes?
    #28635975 - 01/26/24 06:06 PM (1 day, 13 hours ago)

As the title suggests, I’ve got some BRF jars that are definitely too wet. Not sure if I measured incorrectly, used vermiculite that was too coarse, or what….The mycelium has almost covered the entire outer (visible) surface of most jars, but here’s the thing… I opened one the other day (it had a spot of trichoderma near the top, so I scrapped it), and when I pulled the cake apart I found that the center had the texture of dense/mucky clay and it appeared that the mycelium was avoiding it.

My plan from the start has been to shred these BRF cakes into shoeboxes, but I’m thinking that might be a bad idea with this overly wet batch. If there’s BRF in the center of the cake that hasn’t been colonized yet, it seems that shredding it would expose that “food” for all sorts of microorganisms to enjoy.

I plan to wait at least a week from when the outer surface is fully colonized before I do anything - maybe even longer - but it’s so wet and mucky in the center that I’m not sure the mycelium will ever make its way in there.

It seems like I could… (a) wait extra long after full colonization then go ahead and birth/rinse and shred into shoebox as I’d planned, or (b) wait extra long before birthing/rinsing then place full cakes into a shoebox and cover them with coir.

Should I even rinse at all, given there will likely be some uncolonized BRF still in the interior of the cake?

I’m not really interested in setting up a SGFC or Water Tub, since neither of those really fit into my longer term plans.

What would you do?

Here’s a photo of how the jars look. The one I dissected looked the same, aside from the spot of green funk right below one of the inoculation holes.

There definitely could be some bacteria in there. But even when I first took them out of the pressure cooker they seemed wet. I didn’t know about the field capacity check and just rolled with the recipe (or maybe mismeasured?).

I actually made another batch of PF jars yesterday following the same recipe (2:1:1), except this time I used vermiculite with a smaller grain size. The moisture on this one felt perfect - one or two drops coming out when I squeezed the crap out of it in my fist.

So even though this jar looks good to me, I know that the inside is WET.

Nice! Glad to hear that worked out!

I’m trying to curb the spending on this new hobby, so right now the only clear tubs I have available are my SAB and 4 shoeboxes. I think I’m gonna birth/rinse and bury the whole cakes with some coir and see how that works.
