Good budget grain spawn?

Hello,
I finally bought a PC and am looking at different grain options, and am looking for the best deal. I was planning on using popcorn, but I'm open to other ideas. A local store sells 8lb of kernels for $13 and I figure that's the best I'll find. Does anyone recommend any other spawn, or have any problems w/ popcorn?

You might be able to find 40-50# bags of wheat or oats for that same price or cheaper, you may have to pay $25. $1.62 is expensive for grain for spawn but if that’s the easiest thing then do what you got to. If your set on using popcorn you could also find bigger sacks at a chef supply store for a better price.

Could also check out wild bird seed maybe? Generally like $15-20 for 40lbs.

Think I paid $20 for a 50# bag of oats last year. Let's just say I won't be running out anytime soon...

Same, bought a 25kg bag for less than £30 on Amazon, delivered to the door. Has lasted me a few years and roughly half way through. Cheap as anything and never need to restock. Failing that, I've bought wheat berries from Indian grocers before when I didn't have a bulk of grains. Bout £1 for 1kg. Not as cheap but readily available if needed.

Yeah birdseed or feed oats are typically the most cost effective with the best results and available. Check craigslist for local farms that sell grain too, rye or wheat, or milo.
Popcorn varies a lot an much of it is a pain in the ass and gives poor results and is prone to contamination as well as difficult to properly prep. Not at all something I'd suggest using to get a foundation of experience. If you have nothing else it can work but takes a lot of dialing in.

+1 on Wheat berries or Oats. Rye berries are another great option.

Is the reason brown rice isn't more popular due only to cost? A 5 lb bag at Walmart is like $2 or $3. Are yields with rye or oats superior?

Rice is sticky and tricky, not an ideal grain. Some people work with it, but they are few. Most people use other grains because they are easier to work with and generally cheaper.

I haven't got oats down yet. They're always wet and sticky. I'm going to try one more time this weekend only boiling for like 15 minutes and letting them dry overnight. Millet has been my fav to work with but it's certainly on the pricier side.

As Mr Piggy mentioned, the grains stick together too much. A pain to work with.
Id say yields for rye, oats and wheat berries are all about the same.

+1 for oats. Get a 50# bag a Tractor Supply for ~$25 and it will last you years.

Thanks for all the feedback! I'm leaning towards brown rice now... I tried UB tek in the past and brown rice colonized faster than anything I've ever seen. I can get it in bulk at my local Costco aswell. I tried to make brown rice jars w/o a PC and it was contam city... can't wait for the PC lol.

I thought this video was really useful to compare all the options. Maybe it varies on species and more testing should be done, but brown rice looks worth the price versus going for the cheaper oats.

UB is shit and not a TEK. I highly advise against using brown rice, but you do you.
I personally use WBS and not only is it cheaper than brown rice, it works better.

Pro tip: DO NOT source cultivation information from youtube, especially not from guys who wear tyvek suits for their videos.
Another red flag is anyone who claims experience but calls cultivation mycology, they are not the same. We are cultivators, not mycologists.

Sounds good. It's difficult to find reliable info, as so many people just say shit. I've been reading through Rogerrabbit post's as I trust them, they've been around for so long they gotta know what they're talking bout. Internet is great and also awful
