Bod, new people keep asking if gypsum should be used for cube substrate.

You mention CVG in the OP.

Gypsum is not a thing anymore is it? I thought it was just bro science at this point.

i couldnt find it here reading this tek..

So..
how hot must the water be to douse the coir in the bucket?

Exactly 80 degrees celsius (176F) or fully boiling i.e. 100 degrees (212F) celsius?

Thanks a lot

It can be room temperature and it doesn't really matter.  But for the sake of this thread, full boil.

i think that's really crucial.

Because I had to throw away my almost fully colonized spawn the first time I made a casing in the shift process with kokos.

I doused it at 93 degrees celsius and had it in the bucket for 24 hours and then used it cooled down.

After 7-10 days I had apparently cobweb on the casing + mycelium.
I was advised to dispose of everything, which I did.

the whole thing was also in a sealed plastic box that had been strictly disinfected beforehand and then stood in the dark.

My guess is that the mold was in the coir and had thrived because the pasteurization was not good enough.

Because of the culture I have kept what and have made from it overgrown rye pf glasses. which are now just in fruiting and grow well
And nothing with cobweb. have this time vermiculite used for rolling.

So before I touch coir again, I will rather take directly exclusively 100 degrees celsius water and make 24h in the bucket tek before I roll in cake with it to make the water tub tek

Can you just boil the water in a 3 gallon pot then add your cvg and put it in a warm oven? Wouldn’t that insulate it and make a bucket obsolete?

I make my substrate in oven bags, pour simmering water over the coir and vermiculite, mix it up and break up any clumps, then put the bag into the oven at its lowest setting (170°f) for a few hours. I put a temperature probe in it to monitor the core temp. And turn the ones off if the temp gets too high.  Once done I put a twist tie on the bag and store the substrate in it till needed. So far, so good. No contamination attributable to the substrate.

The best way I've found imo is to put your CV in the bucket, set the bucket on a flannel cotton old thick Coleman sleeping bag(not the plastic slippery ones!), dump in your boiling water, then wrap it up with the sleeping bag. Shit will still be well over pasteurization temps 4hrs later.

I am trying to find a way to make substrate that isn’t sitting in plastic with heat, still using plastic bins but don’t want my mushies to grow out of substrate that sat in hot plastic. I was hoping for a way to just use the metal pot.

Drop a vile of LSD in your substrate then spawn to bulk and tell me how much stronger your mushrooms are, please.

Dude, you’re not putting anything so hot into plastic that would leach the carcinogens out of said plastic.

Lastly,  use your “metal pot” for pasteurization then. All you gotta do to keep it to temp is wrap it in some towels.:intardnet:

LoL about this plastic… always trying to weed through the info on leaching micro plastics and shit. Shrooms like to absorb their environments and I’m just not sure what is what these days with micro plastics. Just mitigating the damage I guess.
Mixing Lucy and shrooms is just wasting one or the other IMO. I only mix my Lucy with IPA’s lol!

Thank you about the pot business. Wrap in towels and forget the oven? Okay. Thank you.

Cubes do not leach anything from the substrate they’re grown in.
They’ve been grown on tobacco leaf with no traces of nicotine in them.

About to inoculate my first grain spawn, I’m using oats. I may be getting ahead of myself, but when I mix my substrate (coir) what ratio do I use for coir:vermiculite? I see the water:coir ratio but not coir:vermiculite. Please help.

I use 900g coir, 395g verm (3 quarts), and 5000mL h20 (got this from p9/stipe). It's worked well for me. I think different folks have slightly different recipes -- and ultimately end up getting used to what "feels right". I would just weight it out for awhile and dial it in from there.

Actual ratios can be figured, but I'd just weigh it out.

Question:

I got a huge 5lb brick of coir, so I kinda have to measure it out since its not the standard size brick the tek mentions.

In which case, its measured dry? I imagine it might take up more volume wet..
..and should I measure it by weight? (as opposed to doing a ratio with jars)

This is my 1st time trying this out.

This thread is awesome by the way!, thanks!

Most people go by dry weight. Those single bricks of coir are supposed to be 650 grams so you can build a recipe from there. Quality comes into play with that also. If it's really hard stringy coir it doesn't hold as much water as nicely.
