Good budget grain spawn?
    #28635420 - 01/26/24 09:24 AM (11 months, 15 days ago)

Hello,

I finally bought a PC and am looking at different grain options, and am looking for the best deal. I was planning on using popcorn, but I'm open to other ideas. A local store sells 8lb of kernels for $13 and I figure that's the best I'll find. Does anyone recommend any other spawn, or have any problems w/ popcorn?

You might be able to find 40-50# bags of wheat or oats for that same price or cheaper, you may have to pay $25. $1.62 is expensive for grain for spawn but if that’s the easiest thing then do what you got to. If your set on using popcorn you could also find bigger sacks at a chef supply store for a better price.

Could also check out wild bird seed maybe? Generally like $15-20 for 40lbs.

Think I paid $20 for a 50# bag of oats last year. Let's just say I won't be running out anytime soon...

Same, bought a 25kg bag for less than £30 on Amazon, delivered to the door. Has lasted me a few years and roughly half way through. Cheap as anything and never need to restock.
Failing that, I've bought wheat berries from Indian grocers before when I didn't have a bulk of grains. Bout £1 for 1kg. Not as cheap but readily available if needed.

Yeah birdseed or feed oats are typically the most cost effective with the best results and available. Check craigslist for local farms that sell grain too, rye or wheat, or milo.

Popcorn varies a lot an much of it is a pain in the ass and gives poor results and is prone to contamination as well as difficult to properly prep. Not at all something I'd suggest using to get a foundation of experience. If you have nothing else it can work but takes a lot of dialing in.

+1 on Wheat berries or Oats. Rye berries are another great option.

Is the reason brown rice isn't more popular due only to cost? A 5 lb bag at Walmart is like $2 or $3. Are yields with rye or oats superior?

Rice is sticky and tricky, not an ideal grain.  Some people work with it, but they are few.  Most people use other grains because they are easier to work with and generally cheaper.

I haven't got oats down yet. They're always wet and sticky. I'm going to try one more time this weekend only boiling for like 15 minutes and letting them dry overnight. Millet has been my fav to work with but it's certainly on the pricier side.

As Mr Piggy mentioned, the grains stick together too much. A pain to work with.

Id say yields for rye, oats and wheat berries are all about the same.

Thanks for all the feedback! I'm leaning towards brown rice now... I tried UB tek in the past and brown rice colonized faster than anything I've ever seen. I can get it in bulk at my local Costco aswell. I tried to make brown rice jars w/o a PC and it was contam city... can't wait for the PC lol.

I thought this video was really useful to compare all the options. Maybe it varies on species and more testing should be done, but brown rice looks worth the price versus going for the cheaper oats.

UB is shit and not a TEK.  I highly advise against using brown rice, but you do you.

I personally use WBS and not only is it cheaper than brown rice, it works better.

Pro tip: DO NOT source cultivation information from youtube, especially not from guys who wear tyvek suits for their videos.

Another red flag is anyone who claims experience but calls cultivation mycology, they are not the same.  We are cultivators, not mycologists.

Sounds good. It's difficult to find reliable info, as so many people just say shit. I've been reading through Rogerrabbit post's as I trust them, they've been around for so long they gotta know what they're talking bout. Internet is great and also awful :tongue2:

Listen to the advice you are getting here.  It is current.

Rye, Oats, Millet, WBS, etc.  Use any one of them.  There are prep teks for each.  Follow them.

Honestly, even RR is out of date with a fair bit of his info.  Hang around in the cultivation section of these forums to learn more.  Threads I check daily are:

Ask quick questions, get quick answers
Post your cultivation picture of the day
cultivation confessional
cultivation general discussion

By monitoring the chatter in a lot of these and other shroomery chats I can stay current on what TEKs people are using, and what fads they are avoiding.  The picture thread is especially helpful as you can flat out see who is getting full canopies of healthy fruits, and who's just kinda retarded (That's me, actually developmentally disabled. ). Quick questions is especially useful for beginners as you will see common startup questions patiently answered over and over again by cultivators who are much better people than I.

I would HIGHLY advise you stay completely away from:

Facebook
Youtube
Instagram

And especially Reddit.
(narrows eyes at SP)

Mycotopia is functionally dead, so not much there either.

For the love of god, stay away from anything Uncle Bens.

I've found that with oats, you want to do them in the dry side, and PC longer than usual. Many people complain about hydration issues (mushy) with oats. Many complain about bacterial contamination, too, with them. Less water. More PC time.

I add 9 Cups oats, 5 Cups water, and 1 Tbsp Gypsum directly into my bags. I squash out the air, twist above the filter and zip tie it. I put two of these inside of a plastic grocery bag, and bow tie the bag. I put several of those bags into the PC, and do 15 psi for 5 hours. 5, because I'm paranoid. Could probably 4, but I wouldn't go less. Once it cools mix it around the bag. Some will be drier, some will be more moist, this will equalize enough over the following days.

I've used MS and LC on these. Works fine. It's cheap. People overcomplicate the f@&k out of grain prep. I rinse birdseed and cook it like rice, but with some Gypsum added. I run my stuff on the dry side because it's just better that way.

Brown rice is fucked to prep. Make sure you shoot for under hydrated and maybe even go to the extent of laying it out to dry in no more than a 1" layer, refrigerating for a day or two, then bring it out and crumble it up cold. It might stay loose at that point. rice is a bitch if you need to shake it. It can grow nice cubes but it is a bitch.

I grow some species on supplemented white rice I just cook no prep style but it stays a chunk and is not supposed to be a shakable substance. Not cubes though.

Definitely a pass on whole brown rice prep. Not even worth it. Its only really useful as flour in the PF Tek. I would argue that making PF cakes then spawning to bulk using vermiculite or coir is worth the extra effort and is a decent "budget grain" bulk option. BRF is quite cheap and easy to find. Plus you can make your own at home from whole rice which is fresher. Just dont do whole grain rice prep. Not worth it.
