Whats good people. I was at Home Depot getting some substrate and I came across this item: "Permagreen pro mushroom compost blend" https://www.lowes.com/pd/Permagreen-Pro-1-5-cu-ft-Compost-Mushroom/3583218?cm_mmc=SCE_PLA-_-LawnGarden-_-Soil-_-3583218:Permagreen&CAWELAID=&kpid=3583218&CAGPSPN=pla&store_code=1554&k_clickID=8a10a130-3d8d-4b67-ad80-bc21919b0450&gclid=CjwKCAjw2rjcBRBuEiwAheKeL9w_91MUe85mWqBGiY4e5jQDtETgZrxiMOqasU1P4tfNHQjGfvonnRoCdDUQAvD_BwE
It's unspent, organic compost comprising of horse+poultry manure, straw, and a bunch of other stuff that's designed to grow mushrooms. They've been around for a long time and they specifically advertise that no mushrooms were grown in it. Anyone have experience with this? I'm gonna do a trial run with this stuff, anyone got advice on best way to prep this? I'll be monotubing it

that's a non-mushroom compost replacement for mushroom compost. something that mushrooms have already used and left rich for plants.
I wouldn't use it but let us know how it goes.

hmm, but it specifically says that, "what separates us from the competition is that no mushrooms were grown in our product," so its a little bit different from the google definition of mushroom compost(which is the composted organic material remaining after a crop of mushrooms is harvested). Anywho, any advice on prep work? I'm thinking pasteurize it for an hour or so? then tub it up?

I think he is saying it is a compost to be used as plant fertilizer made without using mushrooms to compost?
BUT judging by what you said its made of it seems like it would be perfectly fine for using as a substrate. Hpoo, chicken poo, straw? If you want add some gypsum and a tablespoon of lime and maybe mix with some coco coir or vermiculite and yeah pasturize for 1-2 hours and let cool to 80 and mix your spawn in.

Hello, I was wondering if you used the Permagreen Pro Mushroom Compost and if you had good results. I have some and would like to know if I need to know anything about using it as a substrate. (This will be my first attempt at growing)

Hi Jrober. Welcome to the shroomery. First off you replied to a thread that has been inactive for over 5 years. Check out the current active threads in the mushroom cultivation section. Several general discussion and quick question threads with high activity.

To answer your question. No that product will not make for a proper substrate for mushroom cultivation. Itβs for growing vegetables and plants. What your going to want to use is 100% coco coir to produce your substrate. Coir is inert and will not provide the needed nutrients contamination needs to thrive. Substrate is basically a water retention media for the mushrooms to pull from.
Happy growing.
