my friend lives in california and can't order spores so they want to write a book about how to get spores. they want to have a character in their book drive to oregon and rent a hotel or cabin, and have the spores sent there while they stay. they are looking for ideas for the book about how to do this in the story, without involving anyone else but themselves. does anyone have any idaeas.

I fear that the premise of the plot is inaccurate, and therefore the story is one of inefficiency. This reminds me of the Lord of the Rings Trilogy: epic, certainly, but it would have been a lot shorter and there would have been less bloodshed if they just got a ride on one of those giant birds and didn't walk all the way to Mordor.

That reminds me of the time my good friend SOMEONE WHO ISN'T ME committed a whole bunch of felonies related to the production of psychedelic substances.
IDK dude, sure, there are probably cheaper and easier ways but whatever floats your boat

This is bestseller material right here. If you can just avoid spouting a bunch of bigoted stuff about trans people I think we can get you a 7 book deal easy.
Except I think you basically spelled out the whole plot. Wouldn't the character just go to another state and just order it at that address for the shipping info?

I’m sure you can find some nice person to send you spores.
Not to mention, there are tons of wild psilocybes to be found while mushroom hunting in California.
For the book I mean.
Swim on over to read this article. Spores are federally legal. https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/28609566

Even if you go off the rails, we could probably get at least 5 books in before you get cancelled. Then, you run for office.

I think that would be criticism about it not making sense. Why is the character going through all this trouble when they can just find a reputable vendor list and see which ones don't exclude California?

I don't know how PO boxes work exactly, if you would be able to call the post office and setup a PO box like your moving and want to have your mail sent there before your moved into your new place and cancel it after a month when you pick up your mail because your plans changed.
Obviously there is the issue with the key and all but I'm sure they could give you the key when you got there if you provided the correct information.
But yeah I'm sure there are endless ways to go about that mission, that was just the first thing that popped into my head if you don't have friends or relatives in a different state that would forward you some mail.

I have to say I'm a tad disappointed that you're addressing us with the shorthand of a 13 yo girl who's texting her besty for make-up tips, instead of proper English, which causes me to have doubts."

Maybe the character gets to Oregon and rents the cabin, but it turns out a serial killer is on the loose in that very area, and the killer has a strange fetish for innoculating the almost-but-not-quite-dead bodies of their victims with spores of the psilocybin containing mushrooms. And so the main character of our story ends up serendipitously (is that the right word?) growing magic mushrooms straight from their own flesh. And a heavenly beautiful lady rescues him before he is fully dead, and together they consume the mushrooms growing from his torso, and they have the most lovely trip together and live happily ever after.

Maybe they drive over the border and buy spores at a head shop. Or does the plot require the mail?

You don’t need PO Box. If sender used USPS as carrier you can do a General Delivery to whatever city, easy to find exactly which post office online as one post office seems to handle that per city I’ve found, so, simple search online to General Delivery whatever city if using USPS can have your mail delivered and held at that post office.
The mail addressed as such.
(Name) General Delivery (Name of city, staye and zip code)
Show up with picture ID and pick up your mail.
If UPS or FedEx, you can have that delivered to one of their stores addresses and pick up with ID.
I found this yesterday, Oregon has cubensis edibles and spore kits sold openly in headshop.

thanks for all the responses and even the funny ones. and especially thanks to the person who messaged me. the character is now no longer going to be trying to get spores in california because they've figured out how in the book. the character is also going to be changing adventures to
once upon a time, in a quaint village nestled at the edge of an ancient, mysterious forest, there lived a fearless adventurer named Alexander. He wanted to get some mushrooms spores in california, but now his adventure has changed. Known for his courage and daring spirit, tales of his exploits echoed through the cobbled streets. One fateful night, under the silver glow of a full moon, an eerie howl pierced the air, sending shivers down the spines of the villagers. Unable to ignore the call of the unknown, Alexander decided to venture into the heart of the ominous woods. Armed with a silver blade and a heart full of bravery, he stepped into the shadows, guided only by the moon's ethereal light. As Alexander delved deeper into the woods, the trees closed in, casting eerie shadows that danced with the wind. Strange whispers echoed through the stillness, and the air became thick with an otherworldly tension. Yet, he pressed on, determined to face whatever awaited him. Suddenly, a pair of piercing yellow eyes glowed in the darkness, and a menacing growl reverberated through the trees. The moonlight revealed a hulking figure with fur as black as midnight—the legendary werewolf. Its claws gleamed, and saliva dripped from its razor-sharp teeth. The battle between man and beast ensued, each move accompanied by the rustle of leaves and the ominous howls of the creature. With a swift and decisive strike, Alexander plunged his silver blade into the werewolf's heart, releasing an otherworldly howl that echoed through the forest. As the creature crumbled into the shadows, a soft voice emerged from the darkness. A damsel in distress, held captive by the werewolf's curse, stepped into the moonlight. Her name was Isabella, and her eyes sparkled with gratitude and something more.
With the werewolf defeated, the night transformed into a celebration of victory and newfound companionship. Isabella shared her tale of captivity, and Alexander listened intently, captivated not only by her words but also by her beauty. The moonlit night unfolded into a series of mad, crazy, and, yes, even sexy adventures as Alexander and Isabella navigated the enchanted forest together. They encountered mystical creatures, solved riddles, and discovered hidden wonders that seemed to exist only under the silver glow of the full moon. As dawn approached, painting the sky with hues of pink and orange, Alexander and Isabella emerged from the woods hand in hand, victorious and forever bound by the unforgettable night they shared. The village welcomed them back as heroes, and the once-creepy woods now held the magic of a love that had blossomed amidst the shadows and moonlight.

This thread makes me happy
I'm also trying to sift through the metaphors. So instead of ordering spores through a trusted vendor and getting into mycology, the main character hunted a feral dog, fell in love, and is no longer interested in mushroom cultivation?

I feel click baited. This story wasn't anything like the plot summary. 1/5, didn't expect a romance novel.
