Lids

Hey guys, so I've done two batches of agar to oats so far.
For the first batch I used the lids that came with my qt jars, drilled a hole in them, and stuffed them with filter floss. That batch was successful.
For the second I did the unmodified plastic lid tek (unscrewed half a turn) and those jars never grew anything. It's been a year and they're still sitting there. No mycelium, no contam, nothing.
I'm about to run my third batch and can't decide what to do? I'd love to go unmodified rather than use the old rusty lids but I'm hesitant for obvious reasons. Thoughts?

You need more data. Try again with the two lid types but at the same time with the same batch of grain, same PC run, with agar wedges from the same plate that has been transferred at least a few times for symmetry.

Why half a turn? The tek says finger tight and loosen by a .25" turn (a quarter of an inch). That's like barely loosening it. Only a psychopath would do a half turn.

I no-mod the white ball lids with the imperfect seal and keep them snug.

What's the moisture level look like in the jars in question? Perhaps the half-turn--assuming this means 180 degree rotation--increased FAE too much and dried everything out?

Maybe it was 1/4 turn. I don't remember, that was a year ago. I followed a tek on this site. And wouldn't opening it more invite contam (which I didn't get)?

I’m trying to decide what to do for lids soon (🤞🤞 assuming my current stuff is successful).
It seems like Synthetic Filter Discs are all the rage right now, but there are so many different recommendations for different products with different micron ratings and different filtering percentages from different vendors at different prices that it’s really hard to tell if I’m getting the right thing….
So I keep circling back to the old-school method of just drilling holes and stuffing them with a wad of pillow fluff. If it ain’t broke, and all that…

It might sound dumb but it's so much easier to use old dryer sheets if you roll them up and cut off the extra once your happy with it.
Polyfill can be fun to keep in place and dryer sheets are like a plastic as well that doesn't soak up water.
If you roll them up tight enough you can get them to fan out a bit on both sides to hold it in place without fear of losing your filter.

They are completely dry. But I may not have done a half turn. I must be remembering wrong (i did those jars a year ago). I followed whatever it said in the unmodified lid tek on this site

How did they become completely dry with an unmodified lid?

Best answer. I'll go with the old two piece lids. Maybe throw in two plastic lids just for fun

You just barely pop the lid off in case the lid is airtight. Any gap in there should create proper gas exchange.
All my grows are unmodded lids and successful, besides, there is way more than enough air in an airtight jar for 200ml of PF tek to be colonized (or almost), so you should've atleast seen something. Your jar had another issue.
