Chris Burkard seems to be very much a real photographer, so it would strike me as beyond the pale for either him or a publication such as National Geographic to attempt to pass off an AI generated image as an actual photo. The tree is missing its crown, but probably because it is dead and only the trunk remains standing at this point, which might also make it a more likely substrate for fungi. The text accompanying the photo is also rather specific—the tree is a sequoia located in the Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks and photographed in the fall of 2023.

I'm guessing it's a Pleurotus sp. but the color is unusual. This could be the result of some environmental factor or overly aggressive color correction / manipulation.

I've seen Pleurotus dryinus with yellowish tints on conifers in the Sierras.

But the color on these is definitely embellished.

Pleurotus have gills though... those just look really veined... they look like someone created a chanterelle- Pleurotus hybrid. Orange and veined like chanterelles, growing in clumps up a tree like Pueurotus.
I was wondering if somehow someone else maybe hacked the photographer's account... I can't imagine risking one's reputation by posting anything AI.. but the whole series looks a bit odd.

The immature gills of Pleurotus dryinus often look like that, although there's usually still a fair amount of partial veil present at that stage as well.
