Took a transfer from a subaeruginascens plate labeled 1/14/22. Looks like it took off pretty good. I wasn’t able to pull this one off back then, so hope to be able to this time. I’m pretty impressed in some of these cultures on Petri dishes that are two years old and don’t skip a beat on a single transfer. I do have a semilanceata that was taken from a two year old plate that is definitely not that fast to get going again, but think it was pretty slow to begin with.

How do you prevent the grains from drying out from such long colonization times?

I've been using a single hole polyfill stuffed lid with the seal meeting the glass. In a month or three timeframe, I haven't seen drying being an issue.

That’s great! I wonder if my unmodified jars will help with that as well!

You can store mycelium on dried grain kernels, they're great for long term storage. Essentially let a jar of grain spawn colonize and dry out fully

I’ve heard of this before 🤔 I actually just had a friend send me some like this. Going to see what they can do 😎

Spawned neoxalapensis, semps, caerulescens SC, ps cyanescens, ps aztecorum, thaiaeruginomaculans (tweeq), g purpuratus (bobwastaken) to my straw+hwfp+cpoo+coir mix.

Also moved semps, zap talpa 2, nec d, tamps to fruiting after casing with peat+verm.

Tested every jar with g2a on its way to spawn as well.

What are your plans for the wood lovers in that substrate? Gonna cold shock and try to fruit them?
I've been planning on pasteurizing some old wood chips and maybe manure to spawn baeos and aztecorum to, but I haven't gotten around to that yet. Super curious to see how your experiments turn out!

Running with Alan's idea "all psilocybes are woodlovers" and some of my substrate tests. I'm not expecting good performance but I'll be happy if I get fruits.

And this way I can diverge from the substrate I have for species that don't seem to do well on it. But so far, everything has done as well or better on it than anything else I've tried.

To your question, I plan on fruiting in my cold fruiting chamber if I can. I don't have any plans for outdoor beds, as the cold fruiting species that I have are somewhat established precedent of fruiting indoors, except baeocystis.

I noticed neoxalapensis, baeocystis, and banderillensis did not care for fresh woody material (sterilized alder or pine chips)

They do care for mulch and manure it seems! Excellent work. I'm excited to see updates!

Thanks! I'll update when I have some news, I also put baeos to this substrate but they are going slow so here's hoping something happens🤞. I keep backups going to cover the inevitable failures.

Regarding the sub, here are a bunch of shoeboxes that are nearly completely colonized.

Zaps

Ovoids, pan bi

Psilocybe Aztecorum test substrate day 32

Psilocybe Aztecorum test substrate day 32

Seems to have picked up speed since it was put in the cold room. I uncovered it last night and gave it a first misting.

Nice work!

What temp is your cold room set to? I have an aztec block throwing rhizos similar to yours that has sat in a 50-60F garage for weeks now no pins yet. Probably need to go lower

I think it's genetics and time clock thing too. All these EXOTICS and WL have to do is try n grow spores to reproduce so they will pop once fully colonized and moisture is right . Long vacations are ok too its nicer than quick harvest cube grows lol

I agree time is probably a factor. The spawn was made from a pf cake from 07/16 and put to alder chips 10/08, I was hoping for fruits by around now tbh!

The sub is a 30/30/30 mix of straw/coir/wfp. The remaining 10 is manure, chips and verm. The casing is a 33/33/33 mix of cactus soil, verm and crushed perlite.

It's somewhat at the mercy of nature. It's just an unused bathroom on the shady side of the house. The heat in there is set at about 38F to keep the pipes from freezing. Keeping the door closed makes it the coldest room in the house averaging 50's to low 60's the way the weather is now. That freeze we had a few weeks ago had it down to 46F which is the lowest I've seen it since I quit using it.
They really took off when the low temps hit though. I might throw it in the fridge from time to time and see if that and the misting can trigger something down the road. Right now I think it still has a little colonizing to do. It just found the air a matter of days ago. The room won't start warming up until well into March/April so there's still some time.

Thanks everyone for the compliments!!

I love the use of perlite in the casing.
