Laminar flow input
    #28631071 - 01/22/24 01:29 PM (5 days, 18 hours ago)

Is this a ok set up for turn key laminar airflow? I really don't have the skill nor tools to set up our own bench. It's within our budget and I thought it would make a great addition to the hobby. I do not like fumbling about with a SAB at all. I find working inside one to be cumbersome and inconvenient. I don't want to commit to it without some feedback from folks out there in the myco world.
Thank you

It looks nice but I thought walls were bad for turbulence?

Can't comment on whether it produces laminar flow or not, but wow... The end of an era... I, for one, will wholeheartedly miss the rawdog pics. Happy to see you moving up, though, my friend. I very much hope this thing works for your purposes.

If that is your main point to not work in a SAB then you will not be happy with a small as thing like this. That thing is the size of a toy and only useful for agar work of PF-inoculation imo. Keep in mind that laminar flow is not achieved over the whole face of a flow hood and that you will have to work in the center for best results. This will not leave you with a lot of "safe space" to work in at all. Draw a 12x12" square on a cardboard box place it on a table put a couple of masking tape strips down to mark out the side walls and do a few dummy runs of the work you usually do in front of it and see how much freedom you are gaining and remember to keep things in the center of the flow. I bet a big SAB with 7+inch arm holes provides a better experience than that.

For the size this thins is outrageously expensive and I would not trust the flow to be laminar.

Look into the The Official Fan Filter Unit(ffu) thread of power for better alternatives. Might be a little bit more expensive but does provide an appropriate level of usefulness.

Turbulence? I guess we will have to get seatbelts? No, good question, it does say the sides are optional, and I'm assuming removable? I would think it's just positive pressure going out but could also see where air could bounce off the chest/shoulders then into the sides. I guess we would have to get a dedicated table, there is a stainless steel riser available to bring the working level up and off said table.

Pictures off the rawdog, well I was planning on inoculating a quart jar with syringe, inside a construction site port-a-toilet or bus station restroom but thought it might look conspicuous walking around with a syringe and a jar. May have to put that one on hold.

90 quart clear tote with #10 size soup cans 6.5" diameter, that would be cheaper. However there's a 24" wide one that would be about the size of a clear tote. It looks to have more work room, for just a lil bit more money.

A SAB is supposed to be very reliable by letting spores drop and not creating enough movement to stir them up in theory. I believe that's be general idea behind it.

Look at the amount of people that use them and have great results.

I'm not saying laminar flow isn't great but there are more things involved and it can be costly.

It couldn't hurt to try a SAB and if you aren't happy then look for your flow hood.
