i bought one of them kits in the black Friday sale (it was a bargain...Not) this was to get me going while I'm waiting on my brf jars to colonize
Anyway,on the 30th november I decided to soak the contents like it sort of said but I placed mine in a shoe box size mono tub instaed of the bag it came with, ive left the verm layer on the top, So far nothing has happened since.

Grow kits are always a waste of money. Learn agar, it'll teach you how to clean and expand mycelium. Learning to do everything from the ground up helps more than spending a buck in the long run.

It's worth checking out how moist your top layer is too.

If this kit has been kept at 50f like your BRF jars, it's not surprising. Warmer temps and patience is all there is.

I am in no way experienced, but from what I gathered from my first attempts, which are still underway, is that the Shroom Gods are fickle. My first 8, plastic jars, were colonized much faster than the glass ones, and this just hit home what everyone is saying here, patience, and be prepared to accept the genetic dice rolling. As for dunking, those instructions that come with the kits are nice, but I found that they are not very accurate as they are very general. What really helped me is what knowledge I have gained here, and then applied even in the simple kit I got.

I took them out the tub as all the growth was from the sides between the tub and the sub, IT seems to be working

Yeah you were getting sidepins because that was the best conditions for pinning to occur. Good idea giving them plenty of room to grow. I'd say it worked out halfway decent for a kit. A lot better than what usually happens.

Looks like someone dropped a smelly fart in the middle of the dancefloor.

Apart from that, maybe that bit was too dry or too wet? They liked the conditions around the edge though.

When the cake was in the tub, the side of the cake was the optimal place for primordia to form. There was the perfect amount of moisture there as opposed to the top due to it collecting between the cake and the wall.
