My first grow * 2
    #28630603 - 01/22/24 01:52 AM (6 days, 6 hours ago)

Hello

I am forwardslash/

This is my first post here and my first grow.

I inoculated 1.5kg of grain with 2ml of Golden teacher spores. At 100% colonised I mixed it with 3kg GCV in a 50L monotub. Included in that substrate pack was straw and chicken manure supplements.

I wanted to share some pictures for people's opinions. I was very close to scrapping this entire grow as I thought the tiny specs in-between the web like mycelium growth was contamination, but yesterday I have noticed these seem to be primordia. Maybe someone could confirm?

If so, the distribution looks very even.

Thoughts welcome.

Thanks in advance.

forwardslash/

I'm an amateur myself but some of those look like pins in the second picture. That's going to explode.

Also your GT looks more albino then my APE pins.

Some of those?
That´s at least 50 pins in the pic.
Could become a hell of a flush.
Let´s see how they develop the next 2 days.

100% pins, and almost definitely APE or similar. Look forward to seeing how this tub turns out.

Thank you for the replies so far.

24 hours later a lot of brown heads have started to emerge.

I'm quite surprised I have to admit. I was absolutely convinced this was a dead project, so much so I did a couple of unconventional things, with a bit of a "nothing to lose" mindset.

I'm wondering if I've unintentionally got lucky.

1. When I packed the cake, 2 days passed and I'd seen little surface progress. Probably typical novice impatience. I hadn't added a casing layer either as I wanted to start with a very basic a grow. By day 2 I'd convinced myself I'd packed the cake too tight. I went back in, had a poke and decided to churn the whole cake up and re-pack it slightly looser. I noticed sub-surface the mycelium was actually making progress.

I wonder if this "break and shake" type process has accidentally helped? Unsure.

2. 1 week after repacking and I'd seen some growth but little. I had another peek inside and I wasn't convinced it was adequately hydrated. So I poured a 500ml bottle of water down the gap between the side wall and the cake. Swilled it around for 30 seconds or so and poured out the excess. I moved it to a room at 24 degrees, rather than 21. This room also has indirect sunlight. It was 2 days after this the entire cake came out in these tiny white spots. At the time I was absolutely convinced it was contamination from me going back in or from the heavy water addition but I obviously can now see its primordia.

3. I've been misting and fanning since day 7.

Just some thoughts and notes.

I've just poured another 500ml bottle of water down the side of the cake and tub. Sloshed it around to all corners and tipped the excess out. At a guess I'd say 200ml left the tub and 300ml was absorbed.

I haven't seen this method anywhere before, so I'm assuming it's an unorthodox approach. Yet, it seems to make some sense, doesn't it?

All that water evaporating from bottom up.

I'll continue to mist the surface.

Here's a close up this morning.

Beautiful! So many pins!

Just a side note, sometimes you can make the substrate too nutritious. In those cases, you can have a huge pin set but a lot of aborts as there isnt enough water in the substrate to mature all the pins to fruits. Hopefully you have a huge canopy with few aborts. Good luck and well done

It's a form of what's called bottom-watering and it's been done, although usually later on in the process when the sub has lost some of its water to fruits and evaporation.

Other things you list such as the continual misting and fanning are not so much unconventional as they are outdated. I think you'll find that if you maintain proper fresh air exchange and your sub is properly hydrated, you won't have to mist or fan. Right now the fanning is drying out the surface, and you replenish it by misting, creating a cycle that you have to manually maintain. It's working because you're properly staying on top of it, but the same can be achieved by creating the ideal passive environment.

I'm not trying to shit on your parade. Your grow looks great so far. I just wanted to give you some context to your methods. There is very little that hasn't been tried and tested.

Looking awesome, though. Nice work. Looking forward to updates.

Of course, and that's well received, thank you.

That makes perfect sense about the repeated fanning and misting. I'll take that on board and see what the next few days untouched do.

I still have plenty of talent to mess this up, so I'm counting no chickens yet.

Well, maybe save it for your next grow. What you've been doing has worked beautifully so far and you're about to have a monster flush, so why change now?

Dialing in the proper amount of FAE can take some time by playing with the tub holes and/or lid.

Do your thing for now since it working so well. Maybe in the meantime before your next project have a read through the illustrious Hitchhiker's Guide. It's a gold mine of condensed modern info.

I will just say, try not to keep misting too often after pins form or else you risk making your hard earned fruits all mushy and slimy.

Edit: I just checked out your latest video link. Your little guys are definitely fighting off an infection, but that is to be expected when you shoot spores directly into grain. The good news is a lot of your mushie troops are winning the battle so you will still get plenty of fruits!

Interesting. How did you identify we're fighting an infection?

Thanks for the Hitchhikers link. A valuable resource, no doubt.

Here are a further 2 images from much earlier  into the grow. Maybe day 3 or 4? Assuming we are talking about the same stuff, you can see it proliferates from the grains exposed at the surface. Those same grains are much harder to see at this point.

It's harder to tell in these 2 but IF some nasties were riding along in the inoculant, as often happens with spore syringes, it would make sense that it also grows from the grain.
It could just be the exposed grains and uneven surface. These days folks pack down and level the substrate + spawn, and then add another layer of packed and leveled coir on the top, covering any exposed grains.
Either way, you're getting fruits so it's a success.
Do you have pics of the pins today? How are they doing?

I'm here for the grow log! It seems appropriate for Mushroom Cultivation, as there are many other grow logs.

If you're concerned with the lack of interaction, I've noticed that issues tend to generate more activity than success. Your tub looks great, so I'm thinking that people are just enjoying being an audience!

Yeah man, maybe it's myc that just looks cobwebby? It could be the uneven surface that makes it do that. And that one small uncolonized bit at the bottom middle is weird. There is probably something in there mixed in, but it really doesn't matter at this point because you have like a million pins coming in so even if there's contam the mushies will win. I mean, in the 2nd pic it's just pins as far as the eye can see lol.
Awesome tub, man. Great work. Don't forget to update us with those monster flush pics!

Looks like tomentose to me. Mold mycelium is more transulcent and "airy" than tomenose. But they do look similar, i will say.
