First Grow: Am I on the right track?
    #28630582 - 01/22/24 12:52 AM (6 days, 6 hours ago)

Hey Guys

I managed to isolate some mycelium from a dehydrated mushroom. Its been a long process up until this point with mistakes made along the way.

Anyway, I made the monotub, pasteurized the substrate and then started the monotub process.

Everything seems to be going well and I don't seem to have any contamination. There are some evidence of metabolites but I dont think it is too much to worry about.

Here is the picture after 14 days and is when I started fruiting (fanning and loosened the polyfill). I have never misted as the humidity is 95% and does not look dry.

16 days (2 days fruiting):

20 days (6 days fruiting):

22 days (8 days fruiting):

For me It just seems to be getting thicker. I saw the very small bean bag like lumps and believe these to be primordia . But I don't really see any pinning. Not sure how long this takes. I was told the strain is Koh Samui

Am I on the right track? Is it just a waiting game for now?

Metabolites aren’t a good sign unfortunately and that thick cloudy growth is a sure sign of bacteria, if you managed to get growth from dehydrated fruits then that’s awesome but did you try cleaning it up on a brf puck or water agar first just to be sure?
Might be the next step unless it was some other factor that introduced contamination  I’ve got my fingers crossed for you but I don’t think fruits are on the horizon with this tub ):

Thanks for the input. I should add that the dehydrated mushrooms tissue was cloned on standard agar and then the mycelium subsequently isolated about 3 times to get a clean sample. It was then inoculate in a grain bag of rye under a flowhood.

Unless what was extracted wasn't actually mycelium, but it definitely grew like mycelium and smelt earthy. The momotub still smells earthy too

Could be anything unfortunately, I’ve been dealing with heat waves and shit grain lately and half my grows are ending up like your photos, occasionally I’ll get a fruit but nothing worth harvesting, see what happens but start covering your bases and make up some water agar and pucks, not just to be sure with this grow but for any future predicaments, they’re handy af to have on standby.

Thanks, at least that manages my expectations. I do have a spare agar plate. Was going to show a photo but its in the fridge and difficult to see at the moment.

But the grain spawn is below and kind of has the same thick white uptake as the monotub (obviously I waited until 100% colonized). Have I cultivated something else?

Also, likewise we have had some hot days pass and I do not have the grow room air conditioned.

That's a fancy looking tub but I'm not totally sure what to think of it. I like the use of led strip lights. I hope their silicone coated or they will corrode quickly in that humidity.

It might come out really nice, the other day somebody has a bacterial tub pin like crazy I couldn't believe how nice it looked.

Its got some patches and I don't like the look of the white dots on the uncolonized coir though, I've heard that's possibly a sign of yeast but i lack experience at the moment.

Even on Day 2 of fruiting they are there so it doesn't appear to be primordia unless I'm wrong. Been wrong plenty before and just doesn't look right but then again coir isn't nutritious like grains to attract yeast growth as easy so ? Lol

Please don't take mine too seriously I'm just speculating and trying to learn as well.

I like the look of that grain bag though, it's really thick and healthy looking growth.

I'd say you did a fine job of reanimating and isolating your mycelium.

I have to say I'm a tad disappointed that you're addressing us with the shorthand of a 13 yo girl who's texting her besty for make-up tips, instead of proper English, which causes me to have doubts."

Yeah they are cheap LEDs with a clear coat over them. Even if they get corroded they were not that expensive and bought plenty of spares. Although I learned my lesson that the sticky double sided tape on the back does not hold up to the humidity. So I had to tape it to the lid with electrical tape which seemed to stand up to the humidity.

The holes have a 3d printed twist lock polyfill mounting on them. It makes it look nice and neat and easy to adjusted the fill.

Thanks for your insight anyway. I guess all I can do is wait and see. I have a feeling it might be heat related. We have had days where the temps have been 86 F to 104 F.
I didn't think temperature was a factor for fruiting but maybe it does matter. I think I might move it to an airconditioned room for a while and see what happens.

86-104 is hot for fruiting. Cake looks to be a bit matted which will also cause a stall. I have found that pans do much better in the heat than cubes. Just an fyi for next summer.
